I've had things left on my doorstep before now - totally irresponsible (and illegal) by RM. The other week I had a parcel (which was a mirror) pushed through the window!! Had it not been for the HUGE amount of bubble wrap the seller had used it would have been smashed to bits. I was also annoyed that the postman would have had to walk over my flower beds to get to the window :-(

Don't be daft - it's not illegal. Thoguh most things are these days.
Love the story about the mirror though. Priceless.

Best mate's husband is a manager at our local delivery office and he told me that all mail should be left in a safe place - not on a doorstep!
  • At the end of the day the postie is in the wrong, it is against the rules for the postie to leave any mail on a doorstep or in a safe place for that matter really as it is suppose to be delivered to the addressee only not left in a bin or shed etc...... (this is why we pay extra for things not letterbox size as they are sent in a van), unfortunately postmen will do as they please, my postman loves to fold my mail even when it comes in a cardboard envelope that says DO NOT BEND, well he did till I gave him a telling off. I would certainly complain to the sorting office, we pay for a service we should receive it, also put in a claim forms available online as the receiver has to claim for damage

As for the seller as long as the parcel was wrapped as not to break the item I wouldn't expect anymore than that I certainly wouldn't expect it to be waterproofed so it is not their fault.

Hope you manage to get everything sorted out quickly and easily

Here in London virtualy everything is carried by the postmen, we only get vans for really bulky or heavy items. It is very possible here for the postman to have half his bag full of things in excess of the size of a 'normal' letter box

Didn't say it was illegal though did he?
For the poster above. You don't pay more "because it gets sent in a van". You pay more as packets take up more room in a bag, so less can be delivered.
The sender or receiver can claim for this. However the process takes a while. There is no way the buyer should be waiting for his money. Therefore it is usually the sender who makes the claim. The buyer should keep the packaging until the claim is met. RM sometimes ask to see it.
I can only tell you things are going to get worse. Postmen are being told to do more for the same wage, and some resent it. Some never cared in the first place. You get that in all industries.
If enough people complain in a proper manner, you will get a result.

After the "large letter" bracket RM price packages by weight no size.

I purchased a floor pan for a moped for my partner’s brother the other day, it arrived in huge quavers box (by van) with 2nd class small packet postage, i believe it was £2.13.

I can send 3 packs for 4 AAA batteries that i sell on eBay in a large latter for the same costs if not slightly more.

As many have said, size doesn’t matter - and for once, in this case it true :)

I have an item I sell, it weighs around 30g wrapped but is too bulky for a large letter and i have to pay £1.17 as a package.

steve - of course you get exceptions. Pricing in proportion doesn't mean they measure every box and have a diffferent price. It would be unfeasible. It was brought in as at the lower wieght bracket many items were bulkier, hence fewer could be delivered by postmen. I know, as I was part of the consultation process before it was brought in. Prior to the change, your item would have been even cheaper. Because you had one item delivered in a van doesn't make it the criteria for the change in pricing.

Sorry if I gave wrong advice but at the post office we are told to advise customers that it is only the receiver that can claim for damaged good as how can the sender when he wouldn't have a clue what damage there was as he didn't receive it and wouldn't have the neccessary items to back up the claim.

  • I've had a few parcels left on the doorstep. I live in East London. Fantastic!

Also had a couple of recorded items just pushed through the letter box, I even saw the postman sign it off himself and I asked him what he was doing.

Mail generally comes between 11am and 3pm where I live. Service doesn't really see too great =/
