I bet it's the bar codes (aka Newcastle Utd).

    No! same old story icon7.gif

    Man Utd 57,552 in 1968.

I'll go for Man Utd. Last 3 or 4 times the record was broken as the ground was developed, starting with tier 3 on the North Stand going back to the mid/ late 90's.

You are correct in a way but I was referring to an era prior to the current ground developments, United broke the average attendance record every year between 2000 and 2007, however in 2000 they were breaking their own record from 1968.

Oh I see. I thought you meant the previous team to have the record.

The answer to the last team to hold the attendance record prior to Man Utd was indeed the barcodes in 1948 and was 56,299, incidentally the average attendance for United for that season was not far behind 54,890.

Not a bad guess then (I had to guess after a load of Googling). Mrs Generali thought I was rubbish for not being able to find the answer!

OOI, how did Man Utd's support hold up during the rubbish years of the 70s and 80s? Were they like the bar codes or Leeds or something when loads of people still came to watch them despite not winning anything?

According to Hibies legend, Hibernian's attendances rose the season after they got relegated. Supposedly this was because they were suddenly a Great Team and so swept all before them.
Disclaimer: I have done no research at all on that but I was assured it is true by a rather drunk but apparently honest Scot.

I think United had the highest average league attendance every year from (at least) the mid 60's apart from a couple of years in the late eighties when they conceded spot top to Liverpool, oh and a couple of years in the mid 90's when parts of the ground were being developed. I note that the average attendance for the barcodes in 1980 was 16,001  picked up since icon7.gif

Does that include the season for Man Utd in the 2nd division in the 70s?

Tottenham folklore has it that we sold out every game when we were relegated in the 70s. I have my doubts given how quiet WHL goes when we are playing badly: that meant entire seasons in the early-mid 90s:eek:.

Oh yes, as with the Hibbies icon7.gif and they boosted other grounds averages with the away support, often taking 15-20k fans to away matches (those were the days). Probably same for Spurs easier opposition better results.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has defended the club's failure to reach their season ticket sales target.

The club has sold 51,800 season tickets, compared to its target of 54,000, Mr Gill said......

Mr Gill said: "We've sold more season tickets than the capacity of most Premier League grounds.

Gill's arguement is a silly one.

Pointless selling more ST's than others if it is still so low that it could put the business plan at risk.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.
