Completely agree, but the Mondeo ST24 can do 190 MPH - if you have a look on a few websites in Google, by searching Mondeo ST24 BHP, this will confirm such, with few, if any, mods.

Regards a Mondeo 2.5 V6, it is almost the same engine as in the ST24, the standard 2.5 V6 has 170 BHP without any mods to it, so adding an exhaust and/or air filter, such as a K&N may offer you quite a bit more power gain.

And depending on if you have the ECU re programmed/tuned then this would also up the MPH as well as MPG.

When I was looking for a ST24, many were wrecked as they often get a booting from the younger driver, but the one I had was looked after, without any mods.
When I was looking at other ST24's, one had a mod on it that had the whole ECU re programmed, which did up his BHP.

No offence but there is no way a car with 170bhp is going to do 190mph without having the drag coefficient of an eel.The car is listed at 139mph topspeed standard.
It would be possible to make it do this speed of course but it would cost many thousands, if not tens of thousands of pounds and would require either an engine transplant or forced induction. You'd be needing 4-500bhp or so to do a true 190mph in that car.

A K&N panel filter is usually an improvement in flow over the OE ones but it won't add more than a few bhp if you're lucky.Aftermarket exhaust claims are hard to live up to as well.

Not being funny, but if these super chips didn't do what they stated in there listings, I'm sure there would be a mass of returns/claims for refunds with eBay!

I moderate on a car forum so psend a lot of time reading posts on remaps, tuning boxes, induction systems, turbo conversions etc
many a time we have seen the placebo effect of mods once the rollers show the true gains/losses
Ive had a superchipped car before and it had a bit more ooomph over standard
    not earth shattering though

My old car could do about 150mph, but then it was a fresh out of the box, Subaru Impreza WRX with the PPP kit on it and had over 270bhp.

Somehow I would suspect that the driver of the "innit 1.6" had either put on wheels from a Fiesta thus making his speedo as accurate as blind marksman or was full of the preverbial, innit.

My current car will also do about 140mph I would think, but it is just a Mondeo Tdci, chipped to have over 150bhp.

From memory a 1.6 Focus has about 115bhp doesn't it? It is also quite short, thus more drag, the Focus RS, wit god knows how much power could hardly do 150, let alone a 1.6 with about half the power.

Of course when I was 18 my mums Renault 14 TS did at least 135mph........................

From memory, so may be wrong, I was sure that the 2.5 v6 Mondeo had 150bhp, and the ST24 had about 170bhp.

After all the MK3 has a 3.o v6 in the ST220 and that has around 200bhp, maybe even as much as 220bhp if the name is anything to go by, would have to do a google search to be sure though.

Please please please can we stop miss-quoting Sassy. As much as I am irritated by Sassy ruining this forum, I'm pretty certain he said his car was 170bhp, not that it would do 170mph. This keeps getting mentioned in a number of sassy bashing threads and it only gives him ammo. Everyone is bashing him for giving incorrect info, lets not do the same.

ps - an aftermarket filter will not increase bhp, they very often reduce bhp as they are sucking in hot air from the engine bay. However, they will increase throttle response and make a very nice noise. I have a K&N Typhoon and it sounds fantastic, but it does not increase horsepower, despite what the marketing blurp may say.

No, I agree, there is no way a 1.6 Focus would reach 145 MPH, I never said it would - what I did say was a car can can more power than when it came out of the showroom by adding certain types of exhaust and air filters.
Air filters can add a small amount, a decent exhaust likewise.
In some cases the standard OEM exhaust is the best for the job. Better off starting with a more powerful engine in the first place.

This then 'talks' to the brains of the car (ECU) which then gives the engine more power, although the cheaper ones will only give between 4-10% more power, the more upper end ones will gain you anything up to 20% more power.

There's no way they'll gain 20% on a normally aspirated engine. For most you'd be lucky to gain a few percent, if that. With a turbo engine it's easy to add power.

I've just plotted top speed versus peak engine power for the 00-07 Mondeo and done a power series curve fit through it.

    Top Speed = 26.57 * Power^0.3257

ie: As expected top speed scales with the cube root of the power output (ie: power scales with speed cubed).

    To do 190mph you'd need 420BHP.

170BHP gives 140mph. If you were lucky enough to add 10% to that then you'd have 187BHP, enough for 145mph.

I've had various cone filters and I make up my own heat shields and a good cold air feed from outside the car, does away with heat soaking it.I made one in about 30 seconds yesterday out of cardboard :p.It looks cra p but works perfectly until I cba to make one out of metal-I use thin sheet alluminium as it can be cut with scissors.
