When I lived in Germany (so was perfectly legal to do these kinds of speeds) I managed to get a Ford Focus to just about 145mph (it was a 1.8 TDCi 115bhp)

It wasn't happy with it though...

    I miss that car

With a super chip most cars can go faster than what the speedometer offers.

This set a side, a mod such as a air filter or exhaust can allow extra MPH on a engine, but this would depend on each car, not complete unbelievable to be honest.

I have personally had a Ford Mondeo ST24 that was tuned, and did almost 180 MPH on the clock, this said it was tuned at a specialist centre and had a super chip fitted which I bought from eBay!

    This is a wind-up, right?

Dont forget a magical resistor, and the magnet for the fuel tank.

Power requirement goes with speed cubed.
    There's no way a 1.6 Focus would reach a true 145mph.
    Happy chappy

No Gordon, really it is not a wind up.

I am not trying to have a disagreement here with you, but surely you have heard of a 'super chip' that you connect to the ECU to up performance?!

Regards the Focus, I don't know but I doubt very much you could get speeds any where near that, even with the best tuning, however I am saying I have had my Mondeo ST24 tuned by a specialist company in London and bought a plug in chip from eBay, that you connect under the steering column.

Please see eBay for the 'chips' although not a mod that many insurers will allow, they do exist.

    Link me to one.

Sorry, but I'm sceptical of any "superchips" sold on Ebay. Usually they are just resistors that make your car run rich.

No, I agree, there is no way a 1.6 Focus would reach 145 MPH, I never said it would - what I did say was a car can can more power than when it came out of the showroom by adding certain types of exhaust and air filters.

Yes they can, its just on NA cars the gains aren't that impressive.Without changing engine components you'll only see minimal gains but it will sound nice(if you like that sort of thing) ;).With some so called upgrades you even lose power.

To make a car that was designed to do say 140mph max suddenly do 180mph you need a lot of extra power, not just a few bhp from a superchip. You'd probably need double the standard power, if not more.

my car has a top speed of 135mph,approx 180bhp and the speedo goes to 170mph
so a superchip will push that to over 170MPH?

You won't get 20% more power from an NA engine just with a generic remap. All they can do is alter the fuelling and ignition.Turboed cars, sure as they respond better and have more scope for silly power increases.

I wonder if it would infact hit the red line before it got there.
