Thanks Quentin and mikey72. Im going to go down to my brothers now and get the money and go straight to the post office. I looked on the directgov website regarding the refund and it states I have to give a reason why I want the refund.

Do I tell them the reason for the refund is due to the write off? Thanks in advance.

so long as it's sorn they wont be bothered about the reason for a refund

I got the car tax which starts tomorrow. I need to use my car all this week and weekend so I don't think I can declare my car sorn. But thanks for the advice. I think I will just leave it with wanting a refund.

Ok, thank you. I think I can do that online. My car is now marked as vic check needed on the directgov website. Lucky I got the tax done then. I have filled a form online for Vosa to book the vic check. Do I really have to have this done when I am the owner of the car? Can I just not leave it or will I get stopped by the police and get points? I have 6 months road tax, 12 months MOT and I have sent Tesco's proof of purchase of the car plus all the other stuff they wanted. They did not take my V5C and destroy it or send it to the DVLA. There is no point talking to Tesco's when they do not know the answers so I am refusing to call them now. More than half the staff I spoke to, told me I did not need the vic check but obviously I am worried, if I do not have it done, then I will not be insured.

But if my cover is only third party can it not stay that way until the tax runs out? Sorry for all the questions.

If you sorn it then re tax it, you don't get a refund anymore.
It's in small print on the back of the form
"If you tax your vehicle within 21 days of making a SORN you will
not qualify for or get a refund.

You don't need to VIC but you can't get a new log book or re-tax without one.

Not sure about the drop to TP insurance as i can't see what right they have to do it. You took out a 12 month policy and I don't see any basis for them to change the cover half way through

Yep, talk of SORN was just confusing matters, new tax starts Oct 1st, old tax gets cashed in for Oct, no break in cover so no need to SORN
