Not wanting to be alarmist but it's pretty unusual for cover to be continued if a total payout has been made. EG, you have a car effectively insured for £600, you get that back. To be covered for a further £600 is not the norm. They may just immediately end the policy the minute the payout is made.:(

I know you have checked this with Tesco, but it's not impossible to be given the wrong info over the phone. I would try to talk to someone else at their end to see if they confirm or otherwise ;);)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Thanks vaio, I see the vic check a bit pointless, maybe I am wrong. They know the car belongs to me as I have been driving it so what's the point of getting a check?

I don't know if there is any point in getting my car back, it just seems so much hassle and a lot of running around.

Thank you cyclonebri1, I spoke to 2 different people who said I would only be covered thrid party and theft, but I will double check again.

I would rather get another car if im honest, my car has been such a headache and problem after problem, its a shame as i only had a new time belt put in a few months ago and I doubt anyone would I would be able to sell the car.

I have had a look on ebay and autotrader but there doesnt seem much. If anyone comes across any cars they see advertised, no more than £600, please let me know. I am in south east london and can only drive an automatic. I have also looked in the local papers but will keep trying.

Anyway, off out to take my son footie now, have a good weekend everyone.

essentially the vic check is to make sure you havent changed the identity of the car ie changed the vin numbers or cut and shut another one together..

endsliegh covered me after my pug was written off although i didnt go through them for the claim as i was only tpft and they said they would continue to do so providing the car was roadworthy (no mention of a new mot) and taxed,

We can debate this until we are blue in the face but the OP needs to read what her policy says, that's the only thing that counts.

She needs to check because with the high cost of insurance and a low value car it could well be that the loss of premium will be more than she gets paid out on the car.

Think of the not unreasonable case of an 18 year old driving £500 car and paying £2,400 in insurance. Two months in he gets hit and car is written off.

If he claims on his insurance (and it’s one of the companies that ends on total loss) then his company will give him the £500 for the car and end his policy costing him £2k in lost premiums.

Granted he can add this to the bill to the TP company but that all takes time, he’s still got to get a new car and insure it (which will be fun with an open claim on his record) so he can get to work.

That’s why in many cases it’s better to deal direct with the TP insurance company so your insurance stays intact

Yes I do understand, there can be 2 extremes ;)

The op however doesn't seem to be able to determinate where she stands from the T&Cs of her policy, hence my and your advice, ie the posibilities ;)

I am having trouble finding the booklet that states the policy T&C's as I changed the rooms around and can't find where everything is, so will be spending my evening looking for this. All of my other paper works in a folder apart from the booklet that came with all my documents. Thanks for your replies and advice.

I have found it now :) so will be reading the policy-Thanks.

Me again. I am confused again. I spoke to Tesco's again and the guy informed me that all I would need to get done is a new MOT. He said, I did not need a Vic Check done and once I had the mot done my insurance would then be changed to fully comp. I did tell him that Tesco told me I would need to get a vic check done bu he said I did not. I do hope he is right. He said the only damage to my car was cosmetic(I think that was the word he used). I really hope I do not need the vic check as it would then save me some money.

    Could he be right?

If it is a cat c write off, they (the insurers) normally do mark it as needing a VIC.

Once the matter is concluded you can check the status of the car yourself to see if it has been marked for a VIC:

Thanks Quentin. Should I check after the MOT is done or now? Thanks in advance.

The MOT status won't affect the VIC status.

You need to give them enough time to update the DVLA database (if they are going to!).

If they do mark it for a VIC, then you'll need to get it done prior to your tax expiring.
