Im so angry with Tesco's. They just phoned me to tell me the car does need a vic check done. They also said I am not insured to drive and I said if I am not insured to drive, how the hell am I suppose to drive to the vic centre. I am so angry as I sent the hire car back yesterday. I said to the man why am I being told so many different things by your staff. He then put me on hold and said he would change my cover from not insured to third party. I told him I was told by Tesco that I was third party until they recieved my MOT and once they got my MOT, I would then be changed to fully comp. He could not answer why I was being told otherwise, so I told him that they should listen to thier calls. They have really messed me around.

I called vosa and I was told that there is no mark set against my car. She said I do not have to get it done but once a mark is set against the car, it may be difficult to get the car taxed which is due at the end of October. She said I just need to keep calling them to check and see if the car is set for a vic check. God I give up.

You’ve had a good result so far, the big danger you face is they set a VIC marker and the waiting list is such that you can’t get it done before the tax runs out which means your car will be off the road.

To avoid this, I’d get down the post office tomorrow and tax it from the first of October. If they query it (which they might well as it’s already taxed) tell them you were going to scrap it so have sent the old tax disc in for a refund but have now changed your mind so need to re-tax it. Once you have the new tax disc come home and send the old one off for a refund.

I’d try and avoid any mention of VIC markers as that will only confuse matters.

re tax it now.. then you have 6 months to get the vic done.. you wont be pulled if you dont get the vic done straight away, it will simply mean tesco wont change cover to comp till you do get it, the cars is still registered to you so wouldnt worry.. you are legal (until the tax is due lol)

Ok thank you for the advice. Do I not need a reminder to tax my car? I didn't think my insurance certifacte was valid now as Im only third party. Tesco said they will be sending me a new certificate. Do you think I will be ok to use to fully comp one or will something come up on their system to say Im not fully comp? Thanks in advance.

Although you need a new certificate to show your cover has been reinstated (don't drive until you are happy you are now under cover again) any certificate (third party or comp) you hold will suffice to show the post office to get your tax. (Though won't help you if you are stopped by the police and it turns out your insurer has not restored your cover). Get someone from your insurer to confirm to you in writing when you are now back on cover from.

If you are buying a month early you don't need a reminder.

If you're going to follow Vaio's suggestion then you may as well send in your tax disc for a refund today and get the cash back.

edit: Unless, of course, you tax runs out at the end of this month, in which case you will get nothing back.

Thanks for your replies. I checked this website, which was the the on one the direct gov websites, It showed I am insured to drive, I will keep checking that until I get my certificate.I can't remember what the website was called though. My tax runs out at the end of October, do you think its better I re tax the car online? Or is better to do it at the post office?

I won't be able to tax the car tomorrow as I don't have enough money, so will have to try and borrow some money from my brother and try and get down to the post offcie Friday. 6 months tax is £112, not exactly cheap. I still have to pay for the vic check too :(
