What make and model is your car Diamond? Could you accept the insurance valuation (or dispute it to get slightly more), and then see how much they want for the car. I am pretty sure that you could get a bumper sprayed up somewhere else for a couple of hundred quid.

Hiya, the excess was notmentioned to me. The other driver accepted liability so does that mean I would still have to pay the excess?

Hi andygb, my car is a suzuki baleno 1.6 1998 R reg. Im not sure what you mean with insurance valuation. I do want to buy more car back so Im going to call the engineer and say I can't accept his offer and see what he says.

I called him back and his final offer was £600 and to buy my car back is £50 so all in all I will get £550 back. He said I would have to get an Vic Check plus MOT. I hope I have done the right thing. The engineer did say that not a lot of places do Vic checks so I may have to travel far to get it done. Can I get a vic check and mot done at the same place?

NO.. a vic check is simply a identity check. cost iirc £35.00. my corsa was written off as a cat c and simply reused my old mot when taxing it and nothing was mentioned (had over 10 months mot at time of accident)

if you go to VOSA's website and put in your post code you will see where the nearest VIC test centre is.. Mot is just at a MOT centre.
£550 plus the car isnt bad as you can scrap the car for about 110 easily atm. what is needed to repair the car?

As other side have accepted liability there will be no excess to pay so you will get the whole sum immediately.

More importantly, did you look into whether your policy ends on a total loss pay out?

    That’s not a bad result…..

As long as it’s MOT’d, insured and taxed you can carry on using it without getting the VIC done but you will need the VIC before you can re-tax it, there is often a waiting list (6-8 weeks) so if your tax runs out in the next three months I’d be tempted to nip down the post office today and get a new one before the VIC marker appears on the system.

Thank you for your reply mcjordi. My write off is also a cat C, is that bad? My mot runs out at the end of Oct so does my road tax. I did look on Vosa's website but couldn't find anywhere near south east London, it just showed locations, I will re look and use the bit for the postcode. I was given a quote by a previous mechanic who fitted my timing belt, he said it would cost app £200 to get the bumper fixed, he said I did not need a new bumper but I will ask around and see if I can get it cheaper, which I doubt. The engineer from Tesco told me that the the reason the estimate was so high was due to all the other damage on the car, there is quite a few but that is how I brought it. He said the panel behind the bumper was also damaged.
Do I get the mot done first or the vic check?I will get my car back on Monday, so Im not sure how much longer I will be entitled to the hire car.

Thanks for your reply vaio. No, I haven't checked my policy. Does that mean my insurance will be invalid if it is? Im not sure what you mean, sorry but I am learning all this through you guys lol.

If your car in not in the best condition, do you actually need to repair the bumper, or just tape over it with duct tape for a year or two?

Hi mikey72, thanks for replying. The engineer from tesco said I would need to get the car repaired. Because the panel behind the bumper is damaged, then I would of thought my car would not pass the mot, maybe I am wrong. I am quite happy to save on money if it was not necessary to get the bumper repaired. I don't know how they decide on all these things.
