I must be the only person disappointed in the lamb donner recipe:(

I, after hearing the rave reviews of the book, and the donner recipe especially, ordered the book from ebay (had an odd fiver in paypal)

Today i decided to try the donner recipe, and after reading on here, i made 3 with the idea of freezing 2.

I decided i couldn't wait to try it, so have just had a mini donner for lunch, and was really quite disappointed, to me it just tasted like a lamb burger, not really anything like a shop bought kebab:( i followed the recipe to the letter.

Dont get me wrong it was nice, just not what i was expecting or had hoped for.

I preferred the browned outer bits to the middle, so think when i do it for the kids later i'll pop the slices under the grill for a quick blast.

To make a chilli sauce i mixed some Encona hot sauce with some ketchup which worked well.

i don't post much, so hope i ain't gonna get turfed out for going against the grain!

Also wanted to add it was very very simple and quick to make so thats a plus point :)

hey, we all like different things, It'd be a boring world if we were all the same :)

I made 3 as well, & they only lasted 2 days. I found that the second day, the meat tasted better & was easier to slice very thinly & after a blast in the micro, was much more like the real deal

you should give the red sauce in the book a try, I like it much better than the sauce from the takeaways, which I usually bin
there was a tip earlier, sorry I can't remember who suggested it :o use half the amount of mint sauce in the recipe

maybe you need to tweak the seasonings a bit to suit your individual palate?
I find after I do a recipe a few times it's almost always veered away from the original :)

Some people have raved and said the donner is just like their local kebab shop, others have said it was nice but not exactly like the real thing. I don't eat it but my OH said it wasn't "exactly" like our local kebab shop but he preferred mine because it was less greasy. I found it helps to put the raw mince in a food bag and give it a really good squish together with the spices so it mushes together.

I guess it depends on your local kebab shop, different ones will taste different depending on the kebab they use, sauces etc.

I would agree, mine just was not strong enough in flavour so next time I make it I am going to up the garlic and onion. Can't hurt and will keep the vampires away! ;)

I think this could well be the problem, it was quite tame taste wise, seems to be missing something ~ OH said dog_pale_ but for me it needed something more, not sure what though:think:

I read that it is the fibre in the garlic that gives you the dog breath and as you are using powder then you should be ok.

This is the first doner that I have had where my mouth felt quite normal the day after.

    ;)

That could be because it was the first donner you've had sober. ;) :rotfl:

    I should be so lucky!

Can't remember the last time I went out for a drink, I'm half cut after a couple of drinks so it wouldn't be worth taking the trouble to get ready to go out. :D

It's my age, I can't take my drink anymore. :o

Omnomnom. Just made the lamb doner kebab & it is divine!! The red sauce is delicious & really complements the kebab meat. I haven't got a camera so, unfortunately, couldn't take any pics.
