I finally got mine in the post!!! And it's damaged!! Grrrr!! Now I have to wait for a new one or shut up and take what I have!

    What to do!

I just like having a new book that's perfect.... so I can ruin it!!!!

Have you got a digital camera?

Set it at macro setting and take pics of the pages you are interested in and then send the book back and await your new one.

hi poppytime - I havent tried the donner kebab one yet, but reading the recipe its like a meatloaf isnt it?
I was watching the barefoot contessa the other day when she made a meatloaf and she was saying that she hates it when the top of the meatloaf gets all crusty and cracked..........so she filled a loaf tin or cake tin with hot water from the tap and put it in the oven on a lower shelf. she said that the steam from that would prevent it from cracking!
I hope this helps because I had it mind to do this when i make my donner meat for the grandkids in a week or so. (oh doesnt like donner so wont do it just for myself).

Thanks for that tip ~ will try that next time

Yes there was a crust around it, my husband loved that bit as he said it was like the freshly cut doner meat off the spit.

I did reduce the temperature by about 10 degrees as we have a fan assisted oven.

Don't think it helped that I fitted a new element last week and the temperature in my oven seems to have changed since then
I'm hoping to make this on Thursday.
If memory serves me correctly, doesnt the recipe state you turn over the loaf halfway through cooking? Did you remember to do that? Don't know if that would make a difference or not.

I read it as 'turn it around' iykwim :o It was delicious anyway and can't wait to try out some more of the recipes in there

I know what you mean, perhaps he should have said 'turn it upside down'.

  • i have just put my chicken in the fridge for an hour (i'm doing the fried chicken recipe), but i seem to have quite a bit of the flour coating left. would it be ok to keep it in a jar? how long for? it hasnt been anywhere near the raw chicken, it looked rather a lot so i put about a third of it aside.

As you seperated it before you put the raw chicken in there I would think it would be ok to store.
  • Ooh this book looks great, thanks for the recommendation. All of the pics look fab. I really want to try making naan bread, I've not made it before. I think its time to make another Amazon order!

I don't know if this will interest anyone, but there a couple of indian recipes I've used before that have worked out really nicely.
I've made these bhajis and they're fab. So good we had them two days running (not so good for the waistline!).
I've also made this curry a few times. The recipe's a bit convoluted but it's set out so you can batch freeze the component sauces that you make. You make a kind of base sauce and then there are ingredients for how to customise the curry into a tikka masala or a jalfrezi etc. Each stage of the recipe is on a different page so you have to click through.

I tend to shop in Aldis so did not want to make a special visit for the onion/garlic powder. I found some on Ebay and they are in 100g packs. The total for the two was £3.04. Not bad for that amount.

I am itching to make the doner kebab for my son and plan to do so at the weekend.

  • well i had the fried chicken last night & although it was nice it was no kfc! didnt seem enough flavour, although i was sooo thirsty afterwards, think that was the garlic powder. doner kebab is next on my list to try.

That's another item on my shopping list, Chickpea Flour. :D

    Thanks for that link.

Those are excellent pictures, I def must have a try to make those bhajis now.

The thing I can never get to the exact recipe is the yoghurt sauce that you get in a pot from the indian takeaways, the yellow coloured one.

I have tried to make that in the past but it just tasted of bitter turmaric.

Does anyone have a failsafe recipe for it please?
