  • I made the cookies at the weekend and was really pleased to see how large the batch is. The book says 10 - 12 cookies, but I made 12 and still have 2/3 of my cookie dough left in the freezer ready to chop when I need biccy time.

Beef chow mein went down well last night. And even better for today's lunch at work. Mmmmmmm!

OH and I had the kebab meat recipe between 2 of us!!!! I was quite disappointed by how much it shrank during cooking. We had 1 pitta each and some more meat on the plate with it. It could have served 3 people quite happily but I'd have struggled to do 4! I used a pound of mince and got LOADS of fat/juices out of it. I managed to slice it quite thinnly too but not as thin as using one of those slicers. Oh and I didn't cook it for anything like as long as the recipe says and it was well cooked through.

OH loved them and has talked about nothing else since!!!

Mmmmm, Louisa those milkshakes and the cheesecake look GORGEOUS!! I treated myself to an oreo milkshake whilst out today and it was delish. Might have to make myself one at home :D

For anyone that struggles with cutting the kebab meat nice and thin, I've just bought this from Argos. Used it to slice some gammon today and it is really excellent. Gonna use it for my second go at the kebabs on Tuesday to cut it nice and thin. :D

Thanks for the info re the Argos slicer.

I was thinking of getting one of these to cut homemade bread, I have just reserved the last one whilst I think about it.

Sometimes the products in Argos aren't the same as in their pic.

Does anyone know if this stainless steel slicer has a serated blade or is it smooth?

I have been looking at some of the reviews on their slicers and the ones with a smooth blade don't sound too great.

Doners last night ... definitely better than the lamb kofte kebabs.

We sliced it after the 10 mins resting time (well, my OH sliced it for me!), slices weren't that thin but OH said the taste was almost spot on! Hurrah! We got 5 large white pittas worth out of it (probably 5 slices per pitta). It was possibly the easiest thing in the world to make, almost as easy as beans on toast!!

Elf06 - you have to try the sauces, particularly the red kebab sauce. I swear it goes with ANYTHING dipping wise - breads, carrot sticks, chips, everything! Its stunning, you will never eat plain ketchup again.

Am still pondering the cost, after buying the mince and salad stuff, yoghurt for white sauce, pittas ... and the cost of having the oven on for 1hr 20mins (I have absolutely no idea what the cost of that is!)?

dont know about prices for kebabs near you, but a small one at my local is just under £5 - i dont think, even factoring in my time at min wage, let alone fuel and ingredients, would come to £5

have just dont a quick total and it costs me under £2 to make the elephant leg. pittas are 25p for 6 - one carrot is 10p, 2 onions 30p, cucumber 20p, cabbage 10p, lettuce 20p, tomato 10p, lemon juice 5p, kebab sauce about 20p

so that roughly totals £3.50 to make the whole kebab as detailed in the book - enough to feed at least 4 people, so under 90p per kebab

using a slicer does make a big difference. i find that just the volume alone, makes it more bulky once sliced. yes, i could prob fit the whole elephant leg in one pitta unsliced, but if its in thin shavings, the pile of meat is so big, it def fills 4 pittas and then some

also portion control has a lot to do with it. if you used 1lb of meat, then you have had 8oz each in one pitta, which is a massive amount of meat. maybe if you upped the amount of salad then you wouldnt notice the lower quantity of meat either

Hi, I've yet to try the sweet and sour but I'm planning to treat myself soon. DH adores the chilli chicken so I end up cooking that if we have chinese.

I use a Ken Hom recipe for lemon sauce and it's very good. Basically lemon juice, chicken stock and cornflour I think, but I can dig out the book for the full recipe if you're interested?

will have a go with that first, sounds easy enough thanks

I've got an Argos Value slicer and it has a serated plate. Absolutely fantastic but a pain in the backside to clean. I leave the food to dry, get it off with a brush and then I open the slicing spacer wide and then wash it with detergent.

    Well worth the money though.
