If you want the mince to go even further (save those pennies!), and reduce the calorie content of your burgers too, try adding grated longlife cooked beetroot!

This gives a really nice, slightly sweet flavour to the burgers. We have lamb and mint sauce beetburgers, pork and apple beetburgers, beef and mustard beetburgers, turkey and cranberry beetburgers, and chicken and sage and onion stuffing beetburgers. You do need to get used to the surreal pink colour, though.:D Really nice with spicy couscous.

  • I have been buying reduced price mince and bunging it in the freezer, but I thought it might be better to do it the other way, cook it and then freeze it.

I have two large packs and wanted to make burgers, pasties and shepherds pie.

I have a couple of questions though, (and I know it sounds daft),
Do I make the burgers and then freeze it raw (it'll have onion in them)
Can I use pastry for the pasties that I have already defrosted or should I use fresh made/bought. (I'm not good with pastry).

I want to make this food then freeze it.

    Thank you in advance.

If the mince has already been frozen for the burgers, then I wouldn't recommend freezing the raw burgers again. So I think they should be cooked first.
Same goes for the pastry. If it has previously been frozen, then it's not good to re-freeze it uncooked.

I think the op is talking about the meat from raw, bought from the shop and then prepared before freezing, rather than freezing the meat and then preparing it once defrosted.

  • Yes, just to clarify this is meat that I have literally just bought, I thought i'd be better haveing a batch cook up then freezing it.

The pastry has been frozen so I'll get some fresh pastry to do my pasties (or attempt my own)

    Thanks for your replies :T

  • I have a ton of mince in the freezer, and so bored with it! Im sick of making lasagne, mince n tatties and bolognese, thats essentially all I use it for, chilli and shepherds pies too.

Has anyone got any other mince related recipes?

  • I seemed to have amassed a haul of mince - beef, pork and turkey, in the freezer so it is going to be used quite regularly over the next week!!

I was wondering about expanding my 'mince repetoire' - anyone want to give me their favourite mince meal??

this is what I do already

    chilli
    bolognaise
    cottage pie
    meatballs (with pasta)
    burgers
    keema
    lasagne
    meatloaf
    pasties (occasionally)

There might be other things, but they are the ones I mostly do.

Beef mince is defrosting tonight and at the moment I'm thinking of doing bolognaise but I'm happy to be inspired :D
