I got a pack of mince today thats far too big for one meal --can I take it out of the freezer, defrost it, cook it (in 2-3-4 different ways after reading this LOL) then re-freeze it again?

    yes, you can.

  • Pipkin I'm just the same as you, 500g of mince is what I use to make a single meal for the four of us - 2 adults, and 2 teenage boys!

One reason we can get away with small quantities with the meals during the week is that the children have school dinners. So their evening meal is more of a big snack, it's not their main meal of the day.

And I was answering the challenge in theory, after thinking about quantities and how much I usually have left over! I wouldn't say I manage it, normally, but I need to get better because I want to avoid waste/cut costs. I have some 'leftover' curry at the moment: I made it using 400g mince, froze half, but there is definitely more than we need for one meal, especially if I do 'trimmings' like the chapattis and a vegetable dish.

500g of mince used to do one meal for us 2 adults and 2 boys 12 and 13 yrs, i make spag bal from scratch.... adding loads of onions and 2 or 3 tins of chopped toms..... then the following day , when i am re-heating i add some curry powder, chopped potatoes etc... so it is like a cheats curry;)

so 8 individual meals, sometimes 10 at a push..

but now i think i will try and see if i can stretch it to 3 meals each for the 4 of us...

good thread..... making me think now... what else can i bulk out my mince with

I feel so guilty reading threads like this, there are 4 of us, 2 adults 2 teenagers, and 500g of mince would only do us the one meal.

You feel guilty? There's two of us and a pack of mince 400/500g usually last us one meal and a little leftover for a reheated lunch! I must try this padding out!

I've got to say that I'm impressed. I thought I was doing well getting 3 x approx. 200g servings out of my Chilli Con Carne recipe.

My Cottage/Shepherd's Pie recipe uses 250g of mince for 2 servings and also uses a grated carrot, which was the traditional farmer's wife's method for making the minced meat go further without anyone realising.

I don't use real mince, but I did manage to turn 300g of quorn mince into 10 portions of lasagne, and another 300g of quorn mince into 8 portions of chilli and 1 portion of spag bol.
