I don't like it with chick peas in, with chilli I usually use any types of beans, DP loves butter beans in it, kidney beans, even baked beans.
Lasagne I use grated carrot, diced peppers, lentils etc
Mixed veg is fab in a pasty, pie or cottage pie type dishOne day I might be more organised...........

I use 500gm mince for one meal, either a chilli, bolognese or cottage pie - I do bulk the meals out with veg - OH hates carrots in chilli, but he can't have everything.
If there is enough left I normally freeze it for OH to take to work.
If I do lasagne I use 800gm pack from ASDA, I made a lasagne during the week and there was enough left for 1 small packed lunch or tea for Grandson aged 6.

Hey, well done you :T. I'm v. impressed.
I've got a kg bag, can I still play and then half my score? I got 11 man sized (half a dinner plate) cornish pasties out of it for DH. He is one of those tall thin chaps that if you don't feed hin the sort of stuff that'd make Gillian McKieth's blood pressure go through the roof, then he goes all skinny looking!

I don't know how far I can make a 500g pack go but I do lots of padding.
Two things I do that haven't yet been metioned are:
1. Add sosmix (veggie sausage mix, I have a large bag from Suma) to meatballs along with a damp slice of bread.
2. I whizz up some veg - usually a large parsnip a couple of carrots a pepper and an onion - in the food processor and add it to what ever mince mix I am making. The children (one of whom objects to veg) don't notice and it doesn't affect the flavour unless you overdo the parsnips.
I also use lentils in tomatoey stuff and oats in gravy based stuff.0 -
Can I just ask what would we o/s ers do without mince...?lol:rotfl:
I can get a large bolognese and a large chilli out of a 500g pack of mince and there is usually leftovers. For a family of 5 I dont think I am doing too badly:j . If its a very tight week I just add more tomatoes, grated carrot, beans and onion etc and split it into 3:D .JAN GC- £155.77 out of £200FEB GC £197.31 out of £180:o. MARCH GC - out of £200

I seem to have gone overboard on this thread. We have a freezer full of mince done 27 different ways. And nothing else.0

Hiya,
I made a big ragu the other week for the freezer. about 500g of mince did us a lasagne for 4 people (two of us, so half for the freezer), enough sauce for another lasagne of the same size and a single portion of ragu. So 9 portions in all
I pad ragu with mushrooms. I don't use bell peppers as OH isn't fussed. I also add a tub of passata as well as the tinned tomatoes. (i like it rich and tomatoey)
If making chilli I use the same quantity of mince, add peppers (strangely he doesn't mind in chilli), mushrooms and 2 tins of kidney beans. Makes about 12/13 bags of chilli. 2 bags does two of us more than amply, we're usually stuffed.
Cottage pie is where I come unstuck. I only like the mince and onions in gravy. So lots of mash on top, and a load of veg on the side. 500g would maybe do 6 meals like that?
Will keep checking for tips though. I'm in a bit of a rut with mince...

Does anybody add porridge oats to mince when making spag bol or chili etc?
I do it all the time and it does help - I once added too many though and it was mushy and chewy!! Fine if you don't go overboard though.

I did it once! Obviously put too many in as I ended up like Jesus with the loaves and fish:D
