Just got a letter today from DVLA

after waiting it seems like months, the decision has been made that recommends that i should not drive.

'It is clear from information received that you are experiencing problems with your powers of memory and /or understanding, to a degree that is likely to make it unsafe for you to drive. Regrettably, driving must cease.'

I am gob smacked, shocked, distraught that another life line has been taken away from me

My doctor said he would be fully supportive of me still driving if i felt capable, i said i was, i took precautions of having satnav, which i don't really use as i still feel fine driving to locations that are well known to me.

Road signs don't puzzle me, in fact i feel competent in the car, only been driving 5 years so still very sharp on what's right and wrong.

Has anyone been in my shoes and has MS.
Have you appealed? was it worth it?

i had my license revoked after my fall ..my records showed i had banged my head as well as damage to my spinal cord..it took a few months of letters back and forth..and i had to resit my driving test to show i was capable of driving a adapted car...part of my test was driving counting out load backwards fro 50 to 0 but when a road sign came i had to tell him what it was but still keepp track of my counting..so you could ask for a re test the hospital sorted this out for me as part of my rehab

Not sure of ther ware you live in and if you want too

But could you use a electric scooter to get you to shops and back and close friends etc

Failing that free bus pass if you are in receipt of DLA or use a lcola dial a ride service if its in your area

    i have a free buspass :)
BUT, i have recently moved to the outskirts of town (Bristol) where the bus is the old type with steps, so no go with wheelchair,
I don't have a scooter or the money to get one :(
I have a motability car and as from Monday will have to tell them.

Really in a bad place now and it couldn't of come at a worse time, as this bus you have to go into town to get onto another to go where you want.

My dad was meant to have his licence taken away for 18 months - he got it back 22 months later. DVLA claimed he was still having fits - his last fit was just before they revoked his licence for a further 6 months.

I think he had to go to court to get it back or something.

Can you ask your GP to write a letter of support about how safe you are to drive?

You can get a scooter instead of a car and use your mobility to pay for one, the most expensive is about £30 a week. Go to the motability website and have a look.

mobility will pay for you to have an assessment at your nearest regional mobility center and they will write a report that is then sent to the DVLA and your licence should then be given back if you pass the assessment, ask about it if they dont offer it to you. You should keep your car for now, dont make rash desions.

All disabled drivers should have proper assessments, it protects you from so many things and makes sure that things like this dont happen in the first places.

muppette as part of the assessment a disability driving instructor will first speak to you and than drive with you if they feel safe to do that, they are used to seeing people with MS like you and the full arrray of disabilities including strokes which means that they are used to seeing people with the memory problems etc. that you are being accused of, the rest of the assessment is done by an physio to make sure that your body can control a car using driving aids if needed.

If they advise aids like hand controls they are free from motability, theres no reason to think that you will never drive again unless thats what you want, all physically disabled people can drive with aids, even with just one stump available for controls its possible but expensive.

do you need a licence for a scooter? i know u need insurance if you are on the road.

i fear the places i need to get to maybe a bit far ie doctors (i just moved and they seemed best suited for me)

I worry about scooters, lots of drivers in bristol doesn't seem to care about them

all physically disabled people can drive with aids,

I'm glad you gave the OP hope, along with some very helpful advice, but I must take issue with the sentence quoted above.

Comments like this really aren't nice for those of us who can no longer drive due to illness or disability. It just isn't true to say that all physically disabled people can drive with aids - some can; some can't - and making such a statement seems to me to be similar to saying things like "all disabled people can work in some job". It suggests that those of us who can't drive are somehow just not trying hard enough. You probably didn't mean it in this way, but hopefully you''ll be able to understand why I felt I had to mention it.

I am sure sunnyone didn't mean it to sound like you think it did
