  • I think the moral of this thread is to make sure you are not getting advice from a fan-boy. MercilessKiller and wolfman both make good points about the pros and cons of PC v Mac.

There were details about this, backed up by the fact Apple actually has the legal right use the Windows API from XP. Can you imagine.... Windows apps and games on your mac.... with no copy of windows to buy!

And I would place money on this having been up and running in the Apple labs for quite some time... just as every release of OS X had been secretly compiled for Intel processors.

    Vista-killer, quite.

    :D

This still doesnt matter... Windows Vista will run software that XP cant including games that will be designed for only Vista and not be XP compatible... What about the fact that with the new DirectX 10 Vista code that you will be able to play XBOX 360 equivilant games on your PC and use the live service. Imagine having a PC thats operating system would do away with a £300 plus console but still let you play with your mates if they have a 360 but no PC.. Microsoft is moving towards having a full entertainment system built into Vista that goes beyond the "Media centre" PC's we have today.
  • I can see what you are saying.... but you are forgetting that more than 50% of existing machines already out there can't even run Vista! This means software houses and manufacturers will stick to keeping apps XP-compatible for many many years to come yet.

In *no* way do i see games coming out which are Vista-only. You are looking 2-3+ years down the road before that will happen! And given the scale of most games, I would have throught you would need specific DX10 support in hardware.

You have to face the fact the new Intel Macs are going to be more powerful than PC counterparts in most cases, and that Macs might very will be able to run pretty much any PC games or application currently on the market today, without a copy of windows installed. In which case, for the vast majority of people there will be no need to purchase a Windows machine again....

I thought Halo 2 was going to be Vista only.

There's no NEED for anyone to purchase any machine, most people will continue to buy windows machines because they're much less expensive and much easier to upgrade than macs.

Why would anyone pay out more for something that does less?!

Let's face it, Apple are never going to overtake MS. To even have half a shot at it they would have to stop making the OS only run on their proprietary hardware, which isn't going to happen.

Also, could anyone give me any evidence that macs are best for "multimedia" work. As far as I can tell there is no reason for this.

Halo 3 will be whatever platform it can make most profit on!

More powerful? How so? Especially given they run virtually the same hardware these days.

And also they may be able to "run" Windows apps, but as to the stability and more importantly speed, a lot may be left to be desired. Trying to run apps from one platform via another is never smooth or fast. Especially when things such as games are so tailored to the Windows environment (DirectX namely).

until Java takes over the world, but that's another thread ;)

Agree about the hardware side of things, they will be pretty identical - apple may even lag behind as they don't support all graphics cards for instance.
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?
  • Arguing with Apple fanboys is bad for your health - give up already.

And for the record, I use Macs all day at work so I hate them.
