    Maybe.

But I have done a Credit Score total with Equifax and scored 780/900 and fell into the Excellent category. This is despite my sparse history.

Not sure how relevant that score is but as I have no intention of going with First Direct I won't know if they are lenient or not.

Edit - Maybe I will apply - I could make £100 for joining and £100 for leaving.
A score of 780 out of 900? mmm who was that with? Certainly not Equifax as izools correctly stated they issue scores out of 500. If Experian they issue score out of 999, 780 is barely above average. :o
If you are reying on such utter claptrap to judge your credit rating then bollox is possibly the correct word.
The finacially astute amongst us don't pay for what is essentially a randomly generated number.
Don't bother with First Direct if happy with your current arrangements, however basic.
Very little point in wasting a search :p With no active accounts you stand very little chance but by all means give it a go.
Would apply to the Coventry myself but could not make do just for the sake of it.
Customer service may be ok but tht's about the only thing going for them as the range of products and facilities is very poor to say the least :(
Not having a dig at you, far from it but please climb down from your pedestal and live in the real world of finance and banking.

Although perhaps Coventry want people with no signs of debt or history of debt - basically someone with the profile of always having been so responsible with their own income that they've never needed to borrow against credit cards or loans in the past - given that they don't offer these products - perhaps they want current account customers and savings account customers who always have a good positive balance, without fail, to subsidise their mortgage customers.

The balance of an individuals personal accounts, current or saving cannot be determined during the initial credit scoring process though :) Granted that statements etc can be sent in on appeal but with no history of credit on file the best that can be hoped for in terms of auto-acceptance is a sub-prime card or a current account with a debit card which has to be authorised at point of sale.

Considering I am not interested in credit cards, loans or other things affected by the number of footprint searches I think giving it a go is worth it for £200.

I will let you know the outcome. :D

I may do but I don't really have much more information to give - my bank statements show erratic income from multiple sources (wage + DLA + tax credits), I don't really have much savings (as I'm paying off my credit cards), and I'm only a tenant.

Ah well. Weird thing is there's no trace of any credit search or unrecorded enquiry on either Experian, Call Credit, or Equifax. Odd...

Someone from the Cov came on here and read your signature!

What I find peversly funny is how they gave you a Telephone PIN and all that but then said NO!

It's like leading you up the garden path then kicking you off the doorstep.

Here is the address to send your grovelling appeal when First Direct tun you down :rotfl:
    first direct customer relations
    40 Wakefield Road
    Leeds
    LS98 1FD
Please do bear in mind though that an AVERAGE score will not be sufficient so maybe the Coventry is best for you after all :rotfl:
To claim your £100 joining fee you need to mandate your income of £1500 pcm AND switch direct debits etc as well as passing very rigorous checks.
Look forward to a pic of your shiny black debit card then you really know that your score is the bollox as opposed to just talking.
The STEP account you refer to is suitable for those with NO history, give them a call :rotfl::rotfl:

I could do a trial with you.

You apply for a Cov First and show the card on here and I'll do a First Direct application and do the same?? If I get it that is. If I don't I will say I failed and their computer said NO

Experian or Equifax can't remember which was ages ago.

Well it's quite important because 780 on Experian is pretty poor tbh - Experian go on a scale of 0-1000 and Equifax 0-500 :o

The initial online application WILL sound positive as the credit check and other enquiries are not completed until the signed application forms are returned.
If they say NO (takes 48hrs on average) then seriously try an appeal you would not regret it and I am being serious now.
As for me applying to the Coventry, I honestly have no need for such basic facilities and that is not being nasty, just factual.
This is how I sse the Coventry and many website reviews would back this up......

If rejected by First Direct it's a SMALL step up from from a BASIC bank account.
