18 month Virgin Media deal came to and end mid Oct-14. Here was my haggling journey:

Phone call 1 - whilst still within contract, I called normal Customer Services team to ask what was the best deal for:
    • TV Full package - all channels and HD
    • All sports channels in HD
    • No movies
    • Keep existing Tivo box 1G
    • Extra Virgin Media box (not Tivo) for another room
    • Broadband - 152mb in our area
    • Phone - Weekend calls only
Note - we had already paid line rental 12 months up front which is much cheaper and covered us until Apr-15

Was offered £10 off list price so £76.50 per month. Said I'd think about it.

Phone call 2 - called normal Customer Services team and gave 30 days notice to end contract. No offers made but notice given on account.

Phone call 3 - within 48 hours the retentions or "refuse to lose" team called me back. They offered me the same deal for £66.50. Again, I said I'd think about it.

Phone call 4 - refuse to lose team called again. I had done further research comparing Sky and said I was looking for around the £55.00 mark. Was offered £56.50. I said I needed to check with my husband.

Phone call 5 - refuse to lose team call again. Had an offer through the post for new Virgin Media TV customers who get 6 months Netflix for free. I said I would sign up to the £56.50 deal if they threw in the 6 months Netflix. They said yes! All sorted!!

I need to phone at the weekend to sort out my LR/BB - free line rental coming to an end. TV already sorted on a half price deal in July.

I take it you just went through the thinking of leaving options and quoted some deals from other providers?

I had detailed costings from three providers, just to show I wasn't making prices up.

My sky has been on various offers for 5 yearsish.

Phoned last week to give notice as entered month 11 of the 12 month discount. Said I wanted to give notice as offer was expiring and it was renewed for a further 12 months. No messing about, no waiting for the call much better.

Ended the call with "speak to you in 12 months" :)

I shall do my homework first then. I'd prefer not to actually cancel LR/BB so let's hope they bite.

...just TV ...or b/band and phone as well??
  • I just phoned Sky to cancel my TV, Broadband and Line rental cause of the recent price rises and I feel I don't get VFM. Offered £13.80 off monthly bill for 12 months. I guess a qualified success, however I will phone again before end of month to see if I can get a wireless router (I don't have at moment)
  • Cancelled with Sky a few days ago. There is a 25% off Sky with a free sky+ box offered in MySky. BUT I don't actually know what the 25% off is referring to.
