Sky, Virgin & BT TV Haggle down prices and get serious discounts Article Discussion

Hi MoneySavers,
I am now out of my contract with sky and really need to reduce my out goings so I have to reduce or cancel my contract. I'll list here everything I have been told by other MSEers so far and see what you think I can get.
Currently, I have:
All the channels except for movies and sport
HD box but I don't pay for HD subscription
Telephone with free evening and weekend calls
Unlimited Broadband
I also pay for sky prtect but will be cancelling this today, anyway.
For this I pay £50 per month= 12 month cost of £600
If I cancel Sky and transfer to Tesco Broadband through a cashback website I can achieve the following:
Unlimited Broadband (though there is a fair usage policy claimed as ideal for 'medium' users)
Free anytime calls and line rental
For this I will pay £23.75 a month free for 4 months and £35 cashback= 12 month cost of £155
Whilst I'd be a bit gutted to lose the TV, more so the kids, it's the broadband I am most concerned about. When we were with BT we were throttled a lot due to us watching TV online an awful lot, an xbox played online a fair bit and a PS3 played online a lot. We also download quite a bit too. I've been with sky just over 12 months so whilst I'm not customer of the year I was hoping to get a bit of a reduction. Sky have never throttled us or sent a warning email. The BB is def more important to me than the TV and whilst it does go really slow when we are all online I am grateful for the fact that they don't penalise us.
I don't really want to leave them but I have to reduce this cost to help with my debts. Has anyone had Tesco BB? I've a feeling we'd be trashed because of our high usage... what do you all think?

i've just rang, 3 different people & 20 mins later, all i was offered was:
1st person, downgrades - £10 p/mth reduction on tv pack for 6 months
3rd person, cancellations - £5 off multiroom for 6 mths or free multi room for 6 months but a 12 month tie-in.
rubbish!will try again in a few days i suppose...
for info: sky tv 4 pack with sports & movies/HD & multiroom/bb/phone, paying about £90 p/mth at the mo', not in a cabled area.
just come off the phone with a very helpful cancellations lady- perhaps end of month timing helps a little?
have got a total discount of £22.25 p/mth for the next 6 months, no tie in, total saving of £133.50.
that's 20% off our £50 tv pack & free phone line rental which should be £12.25.
as we've not really got an alternative (not cabled & can't get BT vision either), i think that's the best i could hope for at the moment :T.
our BT exchange is due for upgrade in December & i assume BT vision will be an option after that, will be interesting to see if this alters what's available for discount next time around...0 -

Sadly we are not in a cabled area, not sure how i can find out about BT vision.0 -
Sky has offered me 1/2 price tv for six months with no tie in. They were also prepared to knock 2.50 off my broadband but I would have to tie in for 12 months.
I cant go with Tesco BB after all as I don't have a BT line.

here you go, linky, i just went thru the process as if ordering online for the tv option. you only need to input your phone no. & post code then it checks if it's available, think you have to be able to receive min speed of 2mb on your broadband. ours is only 1mb (if you're lucky), so no go for me.
don't give up with Sky though! choose the option for cancellations, i just said i was thinking of leaving as it was costing too much & wanted to check if there were any discounts available before i did anything. i got a better result after my 2nd call earlier today. good luck!0 -
Just checked the link and says cant pick up any channels
will try Sky in the morning.

Hi everyone.
Just got a great deal from Sky.
I cancelled my HD option ages ago as I couldn't afford the extra £10 per month, I told them I was leaving and buying a Humax box. They asked what the problem was and I told them I was upset that the Anytime channel only showed HD programmes so it was useless to me.
He gave me HD channels for 50p yes 50p for 6 months! I snapped his hand off, I will still get a Humax at Christmas and cancel Sky.You live..You learn.:)0 -
Would seem that sky are not willing to offer me any deal
Called twice both people said there was nothing they could really do. unless i would go back to HD which is no good for some one who is visually impaired.
I have a feeling the Sky Broadband could be holding me back due to being in a 12month deal.0 -
Bagged myself a great sky sports deal yesterday.
Rang Thursday night to say I had done a channel audit and found I did'nt really watch the channels in my package. Also said I had looked into BT vision and found I could get sky sports with them cheaper than with sky!
Told there was nothing apart from B/band/Telephone package that I was not interested in she could do but to 'ring back' and try again.
Rang back the next morning saying same things, after 5 or so minutes of debate/negotiation the lady said she would see what kind of deal she could offer me. Went off line for a few moment and came back with keeping my existing package 2pack (variety and kids) and add full sport package for 6 months for £20.37 per month. I had to double check with her that this was correct at I currently pay £20.50 per month for just the 2 pack!!
She confirmed as correct so I now have 6 months sport for 13p less per month than I was paying before!!!:T:T:T:T:T:T:TWako777:j

Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
