Sky, Virgin & BT TV Haggle down prices and get serious discounts Article Discussion

Hi all, I'm going to need to phone Sky soon on my parents behalf (neither of them like dealing with call centres due to hearing issues). After the recent price increase its become clear that it simply isn't value for money anymore.
We have the complete package with all the movie channels and sports. But we still only have the original digibox with no HD, catchup Skyplus etc.
All told its going to be costing us £61 a month..... which seems ridiculous when I look at other services.
I can see a lot of people saving that the best way to save money is to cancel entirely, my folks are dubious about going that far. Any idea what I can expect to get by simply threatening to cancel?0 -

my current 50 per cent discount on tv, multiscreen and hd was agreed before the 30 days was up.
infact, it was offered the very next day from when i started the cancellation process.
anyway, i want 60 per cent off this time due to the above inflation rises due to take effect in September.
think i will threaten to move my broadband to bt as well.0 -

you need to cancel, i got offered 35 per cent off (Politely turned down) before i cancelled.
bear in mind, if you cancel and in the unlikely event , you do not get a better offer, you are only a phone call away from being re-connected instantly.
hold your nerve and you will get 50 per cent off and a new box.
btw, i cancelled online, got a phone call the next day with the 35 per cent offer.0 -

Good luck with that one.
my golfing buddy has already been offered and turned down 60 per cent and a 50 quid credit.
sky switched off a few weeks ago, he has been pestered non-stop.
he is holding out for 75 per cent off.0 -
I cancelled TV yesterday - poor discount offered and we have absolutely everything - been paying £72 which is not to be sniffed at but best they could do would be £90 something at the end of this month! needless to say I cancelled.....
Ive been on live chat to cancel phone/BB today as Id prefer one job lot offer when they get their backsides in gear and eventually 'offer' something decent, lady yesterday when cancelled said I needed to do something before the 31 days on phone line, didn't take too much notice as I said Id research today before cancelling those, been back to cancel phone/bb today and lady said BT or Talk talk will just liaise with Sky re: change over date and I don't need anything!
What is actually true?0 -
The person yesterday probably meant you needed to have an alternative supplier in place before your cancellation period is over, or you would be cut off and left with no phone/broadband.0

Its pretty crazy how big of a discount sky can afford to give and still make a profit. The base price for my current package( phone, BB, Family and sports) is £76.9 but after 1/2 price + £50 credit my monthly is £23. This is my 3rd year of 1/2 price and they keep offering it so they have to be making money off me or they would have stopped.
If you already have the equipment installed then the cost of them sending you a signal is so low they can make money off you a almost any price which is why they offer these deals. Even if you slip through the cracks and don't recieve an offer you can just call up after u get cut off and they will usually offer you a good deal to come back.0 -
My friend has had half price sky for 4 yrs now yet the guy in retentions told me today it's not possible to give it again after the first time.0
