I've had no luck - I wasn't even phoning Sky to haggle *sigh*
We are out of contract (we've had Sky for 7 years) and have multiroom. I wanted to cancel multiroom and movies, but get a Sky+ box (we have the original, ordinary Sky box we got when we had it installed). I was told I could do that, but would have to have a Sky+HD box as they don't do ordinary Sky+ boxes anymore, and so would have to pay £10.25 per month for the HD subscription. We don't have an HD TV and are not likely to be getting one anytime soon, we're trying to save money, not spend it! Oh, and we would be tied in to a 12 month contract for it all. Total 'saving' around £3 a month.
I looked online, and chose my TV package as a new customer on the Sky website, and could get what I want for £42 per month (saving of £20) plus an M&S voucher. Pointed all this out to the people at Sky, and they said that I couldn't have it. Am researching Virgin now ...Enjoying the power and freedom of letting things go.

VM will give you a basic package TV (including a HD V+ box), 10mpbs BB and a phone line with unlimted weekend calls for thirty-three pounds a month.
What are you curently paying for your telephone and broadband? The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Thanks, but I'm not looking for a cheap deal - we have the sports channels and they are watched a lot, the movies less so, so I am happy to lose them. I don't want Sky broadband or phone. I just want to make the Sky TV package cheaper!
We currently have Virgin 50mpbs broadband, I wouldn't downgrade as it's superfast, we have three people streaming video at the same time and less than that just couldn't cope! BT phone (which is rarely used) Sky TV - husband doesn't really want Virgin TV because they don't have Sky Atlantic! Phone costs whatever the line rental is, BB about £30, Sky TV currently £60 a month. We don't have the basic package for TV, and that's not what we want, I just wanted the damned Sky+ box ...Enjoying the power and freedom of letting things go.

12 month contract + free standard install
sky+HD box
basic tv + 1 entertainment channel (thats all i want)
braodband connect (thats all i can have in my postcode)
landline with free evening and weekend calls
settled on £30.50 pm which is effectivley 12 months free line rental
I havent signed yet and they are callin me back at 8pm !
any advice appreciated on squeezin them a bit more
I'd advise getting confirmation of the M&S voucher as I joined 12 months ago and this was denied/admitted/denied by various CS reps; in the end (this month) Sky said it was never part of the deal as I didn't receive one even though I signed up online.0 -
Hi there,
I currently have my internet and phone line (unlimited calls + broadband + line rental) with BT for £26.90 and also have M TV package with Virgin (along with the Asian pack) which costs £23.50 a month. I also have a Sky TV contract which I plan to cancel very soon; what I really want to do is combine all my internet phone and TV packages into one with Virgin, but I have a dilemna as to whether I should accept the standard cost they're offering at the moment, or wait it out 4 months when my TV package with them will be at the end of it's contract and hope to get a better deal.
They've offered me at the moment, for XL BB, unlimited anytime calls, line rental, and M tv package + Asian pack for £52/month in an 18 month contract. That's basically what I pay for Virgin + BT as it is, but with a better broadband service which I would appreciate. Do you think I'm likely to get offered something more competitive in 4 months when I can cancel my contract with them?
I called Sky to see what they'd offer me, since I am out of my contract period, and they offered me unlimited broadband, calls, line rental, my current entertainment TV pack, and an extra HD box with multiroom (I already have one Sky + box) for £45/month in a 12 month contract; that seems like a good price, but I prefer Virgin for broadband and better channels; of course it has the downside of not being able to record stuff in the deal they offered me.
Do you think Virgin will offer me something better 4 months down the line? I don't like the idea of waiting it out, because the BT broadband is pretty poor, but if I'm likely to be offered something a lot more competitive I probably ought to! If they'd throw in V+ at the same cost of £52 I'd gladly accept!
Thanks!0 -

I would wait, it's only four months and you can start the negotiations a month before the contract ends. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

It seems silly to be honest, it's in their own and my interest to offer me something decent now, rather than wait 4 months...0 -
Do you think it's likely they'll actually offer me something better though? Given that the only service I have with them is TV?

You could try calling them now (they might prefer to get retenions in early), tell them you have a service with Sky already, let them know that Sky has offered you something similar, for less cost, but you are keen on Virgin, because you like the idea of faster broadband. But it will not be the end of the world if you have to accept slower broadband, for a significant reduction in cost. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

I tried! They just told me that they can't offer me any better, and even that if I wait till my contract ends I wouldn't be offered anything better. I wish there was someone I could get through there that would see it doesn't make sense for me to wait!
Call their retentions department on 01642 191200 and tell them that you spoke to customer service about cancelling and they told you to call retentions.
Say to them, very naively, "I have no idea why they have told me to talk to you, as all I want to do is arrange to cancel my subscription after my contract finishes, because I have been offered a better deal with Sky. Are you the people who sort out the cancellations and arrange the collection of the old box etc.?"The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
