I am with VM on XL package with phone and broadband.
Just got a new HD TV and phoned to upgrade box to V+ HD box.
I was quoted £49.95 for box and £40 for engineer to come out & fit it or £20 for it to be delivered .
I was bit shocked at price and said I would look at Sky prices and call back.
    Any advice
    Thanks
    :)

How much would you expect to pay SKY for their box? The box from VM is rented, all maintenance and repairs are their responsibility. Your SKY box will be owned by you and all repairs and maintenance will be your responsibility.

ETA: Ooh, forgot to mention, HD is inclusive on VM, on SKY you have to pay about ten pounds a month extra.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

VM don't have a separate HD charge (Sky charge £10.25 a month). So the above charges are the only charges you will pay with VM to receive HD content for your new TV. However the HD content on VM is limited whereas for the charge Sky apply your HD content is comprehensive and you won't get that level of HD from anywhere else in the UK.

Sky can get the Sky+HD box to you for free and will install for free too as they then receive the £10.25 fee from you.

When Sky halved my TV package for 6 months from £52.50 to £26.25 I didn't have to sign a new TV contract. Hopefully this helps.

What did you say to get this?

I've also got 1/2 price for 6 months. I did ask and no contract, cancel when you want. I firstly phoned and asked if any deals to reduce my package, as too expensive (£52 full package, movies sports, HD and multiroom) best she offered was 20% off package only still had to pay full for multiroom and HD, really just saving approx £10 so said I'd think about it, called a week later and went through to cancellations, said I was wanting to cancel and how much notice do I have to give as couldn't afford £70ish for TV, then got offered 1/2 price full amount for 6 months, no tie-ins.

  • Thanks! I just followed your advice today and spoke to customer retentions who gave me £10 discount per month for 6 months after I asked whether there were any offers or discounts available. The lady did an audit of the channels we watched and came to the conclusion that there were no packages that could be dropped. She offered the discount after I said that I was looking for some savings during these difficult economic times.
  • Well I finally completed my home move with Sky last week. Got multi-room added a few days later and am currently waiting on my sky phone line being installed tomorrow. My monthly package was the standard package, with the HD package, multi-room and sky line rental.
On checking my package online it seemed that I had two HD subscirptions which I didn;t need as my bedroom TV is not HD so this got cancelled.
I decided I wanted to add the sports channels and spoke to Sky to see what they could offer me. I got told that at the moment they did not have any offers for me. Decided that I wanted the sports channels for a month to last until the end of the season so decided to just pay the £20 extra for the sports.
Spoke to Sky and confirmed that I just needed to phone up the next day to give my months notice for the sports and I would only be paying for the one month.
Phoned Sky yesterday to cancel the sports package and when speaking to the downgrade department I was asked why I was cancelling the sport, simply said I only wanted it for the month as it would cost too much to keep it. Immediately got offered 20% off of my entire TV package.
This now means that, with also getting line rental free for the first 12 months due to being a new sky talk customer, I now get Sky Talk, line rental, broadband, multi-room, Sky HD, standard TV package and all Sky sports channels for £50/month.
Seeing as I used to pay about £70/80 a month for everything bar multi-room in my old flat I am rather happy with what Sky have offered me now. And it didn't take much haggling on my part at all.

I called virgin up yesterday to cancel hoping they would give me a good deal. He dropped £7 for the 3 services package wasnt happy so cancelled.

I am about to move house so may get a good deal with sky or virgin later but is it likely virgin may call between now and cancellation to offer something better or is it only sky that sometimes do this?
    Thanks
  • Sky going off in a few days (see here) so thought I'd call back to see if they'd offer me more than 25% as a full HD World customer since it launched back in 2006. Nope, nothing at all. In fact, this time they cant even do 25%.

    Bye bye Sky.
