Sky, Virgin & BT TV Haggle down prices and get serious discounts Article Discussion

I joined Sky a year ago using a half price offer, so was paying about £32 for the full TV channel package. The deal is coming to an end, so I phoned to cancel about a week ago. They didn't offer anything great, but I've been missing calls from them virtually daily. So I called them back, and it seems the best they can do is another half price deal, but for some reason they can't discount the HD in the same way, meaning it would now be about 38/month. If I commit to 12 months, they said they could do it for about £35/month.
So basically I could be going from £32 to £35 per month, for movies/sports/hd/3d.
Should I accept that, or is there any chance I can get a better offer if I'm patient? Should I let it cancel completely?0 -
So how do i play this?
Phoned Sky nearly a month ago and was basically offered something pathetic like £5 off my £67.50 monthly bill (sports+multi room+ESPN) for only 6 months. Following all the advice on here i didn't just threaten to cancel i actually gave them my 31 days notice.
Since then they have not exactly been breaking down my door to make me change my mind. In fact rather annoyingly there was just one missed call whilst i was away for a few days last week and i will never know what that was about.
With the clock ticking down and me getting it in the ear from the Mrs about Sky getting cancelled i decided to call back tonight to see what i could get. Since the original cancelllation call there has also been the BT football deal which i thought might help as a bargaining tool as my broadband is with them.
Much to my dismay i was met with a rather bored sounding chap in the cancellations dept whose best offer was to reduce my bill by 20% for 6 months only. He would would not budge an inch even when i mentioned the BT issue and the fact that the ESPN was ending anyway.
Where did i go wrong? It seems they called my bluff and really dont care if i cancel. The reality is that i don't want to cancel as i am a big cricket fan so sky sports is essential. Sometimes wonder people are bullshxxting about the deals they get offered when they cancel. The SKY will on 03/06/13 and not looking forward to calling them back at the 11th hour to stop the cancellation with probably some smug Scottish git laughing at the other end.:mad:0 -

try some other tactics phone them up & downgrade your package i.e. remove muti room, sports and espn which is finished now anyway..
you will get at offer on your account for muti room for half price with in 2 month's Sky sports is Half price for 3 months for all existing customers who upgrade,at the moment you should at least get offered this if you don't.. Cancel sports
serve the 30 days notice & order the next day on line... I've done this a few times with movies now0 -
If you were happy paying £32 and dont mind £3 a month more then go for it.
They wont give you that package for free if thats what you are expecting them to offer next.
Wasn't expecting it for free, maybe hoped for the same deal, but was wondering if this offer is likely to be the best I'll get??0 -

If yes, then you should take it. If no then turn it down and wait a bit longer.0 -

Apologies but have i missed something? When i originally phoned up with a threat to cancel, their first piece of advice to "help" reduce my monthly bill was to start knocking off elements such as sports and multi room (all key reasons why i have Sky!!!) and with no offer of discount. It was only when i went ahead with the cancellation did they offer the measly £5 off for 6 months which i duly turned down.
Now i am within 5 days of losing Sky and they don't seem to have a problem with that, what is the point of me retracting my cancellation in favour of simply downgrading? They will be happy as i am still paying something rather than nothing. Not forgetting that my original package was just right for my viewing tastes but i simply wanted to pay a bit less.0 -
hello all, new to this site and new to the world of haggling. please could someone advise if the following is a good deal. we have just brought our first home so currently have no phone line. sky have offered to install the phone and Tele for free. their breakdown of charges for 12 months is: £14.50 line rental per month- free weekend calls only. unlimited broadband £7.50 per month(we live in a rural area so they advise we don't have the greatest download speed) all channels sports, movies etc any hd and 3d channels as well as on demand and they offered £25 m&s voucher also. at first they quoted £87.75 then they offered 25% off making it £65.37 per month for 12 months. the rep is calling back at 3pm tomorrow, do you think this is a good deal or should we hale more? i have seen the first three months free deals and even six months in the past but neither of these were offered. also we found out virgin do not cover where we live so cannot barter using them or vice versa. thanks so much for reading any advice greatly received.0

Considering we've been with Sky on the top package for 17 years and have never had anywhere near that offer after threatening to cancel I'd take the offer. £35 is very cheap for that package relatively.0 -

all cool but if you want some discounts sometimes you got to play...even if you cancel multi room the box still will work as free view channels.. if you cancel sports & multi room tomorrow they should offer you sports for half price for at least 3 months you will have to serve a 30 days notice on the multi room once the subscription services finish phone them up & ask if theres any deals on multi room you should get offered this for half price for 12 months, if you don't wait for the flyer...Sorry but you have to show your prepared to, can go without sky.. that could be at least 2 months to get 50% off may be never..even if you let you sky sub subscription end & phone them up the next day the minimum you should be offered is sports half price for 3 to 6 months..
if it was me i would let the subscription end now,,phone up a couple of days later & do a deal0
