Regarding the 50% off Sky offer, I've only just cancelled (Sky is still active until next month) so can my girlfriend sign up in her name for the same address, and get the 50% off?

Probably not. Some people get away with it though.

Not with this offer, the MSE codes are linked to postcode which will flag up as an existing customer.
I'd say the chances of re-activating the account in a different name so soon after cancellation are nil.

I am moving house and was going to do the above with the 50% discount. Does anyone know if this can be done?

Well if it's a different name and different adress, how would they know you've been a customer in the last 12 months? ;)

I’ve been with Sky (digibox) for almost ten years, and called them yesterday with genuine willingness to cancel – I was paying £56 per month (with bills usually hitting the £58 mark), and TalkTalk appeared to be offering the same services for a better deal over 18 months; the saving worked out at about £600 over that period.

Starting with TalkTalk; I explained that I was looking to cut costs, and stated from the outset that I would contact Sky after our conversation to give them the opportunity to respond. The person I spoke with talked me through their offer (exactly as advertised), but then waived the installation fee (£25). Brilliant – huge saving over 18 months.

I told her that I would almost certainly sign up, but reiterated that I wanted to give Sky a right to reply and would call back after talking to their customer services team. She then started using the “offers may not be available when you call back” pitch, which got my back up a little bit. I restated my intentions, and she asked if I’d like her to call me back (I imagine so she herself could complete the sale). I said “no, that’s fine”, then instantly rethought and said “actually, that’d be great” – but the line was already dead.

When I came off the call, a couple of my eavesdropping colleagues regaled me with their tales of poor customer service from TalkTalk. Dammit – now I was swithering.

I called Sky, and made it very clear that the only factor was financial. The result was no line rental for the next twelve months, my package cost reduced to £29 and a free upgrade (including installation) to a Sky+ HD box. It’ll still cost me £81 more than TalkTalk would have averaged over the next year (since they offered a reduced rate if I agreed to pay my line rental in advance), but I’m prepared to forego £6.75 a month for decent customer service and surprise HD.
AND it was stressed again and again by Sky that (since my contract with them was for 12 months, rather than TalkTalk’s 18 months) I could call back next April to renegotiate things.
No pushy sales techniques, and no hassle.

Those two phone calls have saved me £324. My monthly cost has dropped by 50%, and the only change to my service is the addition of Sky+ HD. Result.

If there’s any lessons I can share – make sure you know what the competition are offering, and be honest about your reasons!

Yeah, just ring them up and tell them you're moving out. Girlfriend then signs up for this offer once she 'moves in'. Make sure that you don;t pay from the same joined bank account and you'll be fine.

Update..just over a week after cancelling sky had a phone call today offering half price full package for a year or free for 6 months. Took the free for 6 months. Happy days.
As an aside I just feel its a shame to have to go through to cancellation to be getting an offer from them.
Would be better if there was a Loyalty scheme in place IMO .

Hi, new user. Just had a really successful call with Virgin Media. I'd just entered the last month of my contract and truthfully told them I'd like to give notice because I could get a better deal with sky. I simply quoted the 50% off codes that are available on MSE and they offered to match the package I wanted by way of a monthly credit note to my account. Initially it was only for 6 months but they fairly quickly went to the full 12 months. They also reduced the installation charge of the TiVo box to £5.99 (can't remember the original quote but was a fair bit more).

In all, I've added Sky Sports a TiVo box and am paying £5.49 a month less :). Just reduced the phone line to the lowest package as I don't use it.
