Been with Sky a year, was offered 4 packs plus movies for £19.25 for 6 months. We also have HD and phone with Sky. Not too bad, couldn't quite face staying on the line any longer to get a better deal tonight.

  • Hi, having read the posts about discounts to existing customers, I decided to phone SKY to enquire about upgrading my full sky package to SKY HD. I was told that I would receive a new HD box free, normally £299 and it would cost me £65 installation fee and £10.25 extra p/m. No other deals were offered. I then phoned back about one hour later and said that having costed one years full Sky package and HD installation and subscription, I had decided that I would be better off purchasing a Humax 320GB digital recorder and cancelling my SKY subscription. The operator I spoke to then asked me if I had been offered any deals, I optimistically said no. He offered the HD box and installation free with HD half price for 6 months. I asked if there was anything else he could do. He said nothing other than reviewing my present package. I said I was not satisfied with that and that I would just cancel my subscription(thinking he would put me through to another department), but no, he put through my cancellation there and then and I am cut off in 31 days. Not too bothered as no doubt they will offer me something after I leave. Where did I go wrong?

    NEXT POST

Having just cancelled my Sky subscription, I am getting grief from my family for being pig-headed!!
What if I go back to Sky and told them I had changed my mind, would they offer me a deal?

    UPDATE

Have received a letter notifying me when my Sky subscription finishes (3rd March), then a customer survey on the performance of the agent and then another one asking where they went wrong.

So far no phone calls or letters to offer me a deal to stay.

Do you think I should phone them again and tell them I wish to re-consider and see what deals they will offer me? If so, when is the best time to call them and what number to use?
  • Our average bill to Sky is about £50pm.

We have just the entertainment and kids packages, highest level broadband, line rental and the "all day" Sky talk package. At the moment we are also in the middle of the "free SkyHD for a year" offer.

Not sure what/if Sky would offer if I were to phone them up - any ideas ?

What sky will offer you - depends on your middle name - whether the person that you speak to is a woman or man, whether you drive a VW, The school that your Uncle went to, Your inside leg measurement etc etc
    ie) Purely Random
Give them a try and good luck

Regarding Martin's tip in the latest MSE newsletter which champions a cheap deal with Virgin Media; I would advise anyone thinking of taking this up to read about the service they have been offering in Leeds lately as an example of what you can expect. I have heard numerous comments on Facebook about this, so it is definitely not isolated to a small area.

Friends are leaving for Sky/ Be in droves as they are getting a download speed of 1Mb on Virgin Media and are losing digital TV for hours at a time. All of them are still being billed their full monthly fee; some have been told the service won't be fixed for at least a month. Don't blindly stumble into a cheap deal with a company without researching first.

Going to try ringing up for my dad later today. He's been a basic package plus sports customer for about 12 years, during which time all he's had is a slightly discounted Sky+ box (which is now behaving badly).

My main target is a HD box for nothing for a year, what's the best tactic: aiming to reduce the bill (then mentioning the box) or just saying that my box is on the blink? Is having a dodgy box a valid reason to cancel?

Update: Best he'd give me was free install and half price HD for 6 months! When I pushed him on giving me 12 months free, he said that offer wasn't available.

I was having problems with my multiroom Sky+ box, which is out of warranty. When I phoned Sky they told me it would cost me £89 (for a year warranty) and an engineer would come out - which I declined. I called them back a couple of days later to cancel the multiroom and was offered a free call out and free replacement box and I accepted this offer. The advisor also told me to call back a few days after the engineer had been and they could offer a discount on my current package as I mentioned I was looking at moving to Virgin. I managed to get 50% discount off my tv package for 6 months as well as a new box and free call out. :j

Do they only give these bigger discounts to people in VM areas?
