!!!!!!? You're paying for Sky Talk Unlimited and still get a bill of £25 to £35 each month for non-inclusive phone calls?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • You could stop phoning mobiles & such like from your landline. That's what we do. Luckily most of our calls on mobile are 02 to 02, so we have a little group that costs one of us £7.50 each month (normally me lol) and my wife, daughter, mother in law, brother in law & myself can all text & call each other for free.
Fog on The Tyne isn't mine all mine... but if I wanted it, I'd want it with a discount code.
  • Yep there's a few mobile calls in there, plus while my mum was living abroad international mobile calls. Willhave to think in future before using landline!
  • So anyway, all I did was cancel the XL TV, with a genuine aim of going to Sky for just a TV package. It has taken Virgin just 2 days to call, and I hadn't actually arranged Sky yet as I didn't want too long an overlap of both services, and figured I had 3 weeks to try & wangle a friends/family discount for Sky from somewhere.

So..... Virgin phoned to see if there had been a problem. I explained that I just thought it was a good time to switch TV, ditching a standard box for Sky+ HD. I explained to do that, whilst keeping broadband/phone with Virgin (better internet speeds that way), would cost me only £6 a month more than what I paid now. £6 to get HD, Sky+ features & more channels was worth it IMO.

So the conversation went on & they made an offer. I explained that my 2 year old was very interactive with the baby tv channel, currently free for a month (never thought it was worth having until I saw how my son acted when it was on!) & then we got onto the subject of multiroom as well. To quit waffling, here's the deal that I accepted:

    10meg broadband (same as now)
XL call package (same as now)
XL TV (same as now) but UPGRADED TO V+HD & NO ACTIVATION FEE.
A 2nd V+HD BOX installed by an engineer upstairs FREE OF CHARGE & again NO ACTIVATION FEE
    Baby TV added to package.

£49 a month, inclusive of the price rises, for 12 months on a new contract.

No interested in sports or movies (ways & means on the net to see all that lol) but I thought it was a good enough offer to accept.

    Opinions?

I recently phoned VM to cancel my TV package (incl V+ box)

similar to above within a couple of days VM phoned me back querying why I was leaving etc

I was offered 30mg Broadband for an extra £1 per month, as I was after saving money, I said thanks but no thanks

next thing I was offered exactly what I wanted in the first place,
    M+ TV
    V+ box
    Phone - 24/7 unlimited

for £29.78, (I'm paying £6-7 less for the same deal)

I called Sky to cancel my subscription, as I have not been using it as often as i used to. Sky + broadband is 75 per month.

I spoke to someone in the cancellations dept and they asked if i would accept 50% off the sky subscription, and keep the broadband at 12.50, for 6mths. I could still call back anytime if I still wanted to cancel. Very good offer, I have accepted but will probably still cancel after a few months as it is a waste of money.

Also, when I called i got through to the technical team by using a number I found online (01.. number), I haven't been able to find it again, sorry. But they just put me through to the right dept.

Worth calling if you are with sky.

  • Well I thought I had struck a worthwhile deal, but already Virgin's inept concept of customer service means I think they can foxtrot oscar after all. Cancelling my TV 3 days into a 30 day notice period that was subsequently rescinded isn't the way to keep customers. Neither is passing them from department to department of a useless call centre based in India.

I have been nagging my girlfriend for ages to upgrade the Sky package (account is in her name, so they won't speak to me)

She has just phoned Sky, asking how much to upgrade from Sky to Sky+, and was told that it can not be done, but she could upgrade to Sky +HD instead, for "only" £200 + £60 for fitting, and then £10.25 per month for the HD channels!!

Not happy with this, she asked how she would cancel, and was told she would have to speak to cancellations.

She spoke to them, and straight away ("as a "loyal" customer for five years") was offered the box for free, with free fitting, and no monthly charge! Sounds like we will just get 7 HD channels - but I am very happy with this! She however is kicking herself for not calling them sooner!

hi just thought id put my deal up on here.

used the number above and got through no bother to advisor and explained that my old deal was running out.(free hd sub for 1 year)

so the lass offered is free multiroom for 1 year so took it. asked a few more questions about package deals and she couldnt give them.she said it was cancellations that might offer me some thing.

so went through to cancellations and explained that it was too expensive and i needed to reduce my bills. Guy said he could offer me 6 months half price on my sky world package. happy days.

also said ring back at the beggining of august and they could do me another deal if my situation hadn;t changed.
