Its true that you dont cancel the phone line. If you cancel the phone line you are terminating the line and it needs reconnecting IE new number. (+ possible charge)

You leave the line running until your new company takes over. This way you MIGHT retain your number although NO ONE will guarantee this because sh*t happens.

    Wow i'm actually shocked.

This has got to be a Sky fail. Very few people would want to change their number and it's actually a deal breaker for me.

So you'd recommend keeping the Virgin phone line until Sky come? And that'd be an extra month to pay for the Virgin phone line?

    Thanks for your help

He also mentioned that the last 9 people he'd spoken to about disconnections had had to change their phone number as Sky weren't able to transfer the number over.

I've been with both Sky & BT before.

Anyone know if this is true?

Do BT have to reconnect the line or do Sky do it?

    Best regards

It's just sour grapes from virgin!

I switched from virgin to sky last year, the number transferred fine. Cancel virgin then sign upto sky with the number you want to transfer. If there is a delay in getting the line installed then you you can tell virgin to keep the line going for an extra couple of weeks - but in my case the whole lot transferred in under a month

Sky do it. TalkTalk do it. O2 do it. they dont own the line you see, they rent it from BT so whatever features they have are limited.

VIRGIN fit their own lines and equipment. They dont rent from BT. So swithcing over from a Virgin line to a BT line can go iffy at times.

Its not sour grapes from anyone.0

IF you have the option to retain your number (like you say they let you put the number in a box) then chances are you wont change your number and you can keep it.

Also, you give a date to Sky (they usually ask) as to when you want the phone line taking over.

VM MAY or MAY NOT charge you. I dont know how it works to be honest, you might pay a bit more but not the full month (Unless it takes a month for the line to take over.)

Its the best way to keep the line going. Would you rathe pay £20 or something extra, or pay £150 (BT flat rate) to have the line re-activated?
  • I'm on full Sky package (HD/Movies/Sport) Unlimited broadband and line rental = £82.

Just rang up and threatened to cancel got it down to £63 until December.
  • I rang VM and got nowhere. I want a Tivo box but feel we're already paying loads and they wouldn't budge at all on a reduction. The CS rep was terrible kept talking to me like I was stupid when in fact she was contradicting herself. How can I be getting £32 of discounts if new customers are only paying £2 more than me? I felt better after I'd given her a bad review on the customer survey.

A Sky rep called round today offering a 47.50 deal for life , includes two sky boxes , both hd, over 1000 channels ( no movies or sport and hd channels for free) unlimited broadband and line rental , no charges for install, activation or to convert the phoneline , is this a good deal ?, i currently pay 56 + a month for virgin media ? , should i try and haggle with virgin media for a better deal?

Call Sky directly and ask whether Sky does “deal for life” contracts…

As a matter of interest, what or whose “life” did the Sky rep say would form the basis of the contract, what options would there be for you to cancel a “deal for life” contract should you ever wish to, would the equipment be guaranteed (parts and labour) “for life” and would the monthly tariff actually be fixed for the entire duration of the aforesaid but unspecified “life”?

It could, of course, be argued that since every Sky contract is a rolling one with an agreed minimum period, every Sky contract lasts for the lifetime of either Sky or the subscriber, whichever be the shorter, provided that neither elects to cancel it.

By all means, try asking Virgin to match it. The reaction would be interesting.

  • Just to add my little piece, I phoned Sky up a month ago looking to reduce our monthly outgoings and was offered absolutely no offer to stay. Took my details, gave me the cut-off date and told me what and when the final amount will be debited. So, as of this weekend, no more Sky but, another £70 odd in the bank each month.

    same thing.
I quoted their new tv advert £5 for the first 3 months and £18.50 thereafter but what their tv advert doesnt show is the £13 extra you have to pay for the phone line.

but my current bill is £35.43 and they kept insisting that telephone and broadband is £30. you'd expect the other £5.43 to be phone call charges, but i have the anytime £8.99 for £3 for some reason + £5 loyalty discount.
weird considering when we originally took out the telephone +broadband and the telephone addon it came to £27.99
and £7.99 was the telephone addon.
Wonder if you had the same women i spoke to, as i too decided to put poor across the board when i did the survey.
