Don't waste your time with Ofcom - they don't deal with individual complaints.

You have to reach deadlock with VM (i.e. receive a deadlock letter from them) before you can go to Otelo to further your complaint.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • also a tip when haggling for any discount and for when sky staff start on about value for money, paying for services you get (they are pro-actively trying to stop the "offer hunters" by the way) ask what they pay for their Sky TV, usually gets a change of subject!

We cancelled sky on 8th December and gave the 30 days notice. In the 30 days we have not had a letter or telephone call offering any retention deal or reduction in price at all. Seems SKY may be taking a different stance now, I may ring up tomorrow and see if anything is on offer.

    Hi,

We've had Sky for a good number of years. We currently have from them:

Entertainment Extra (ie all the basic channels)
    Movies (both packs)
    Broadband (unlimited)
    Line Rental.

Our use of the Movies is fairly limited, and I'm toying with the idea of asking them to remove them in the hope that they may consider a discounted alternative. If they don't play ball and just let me remove the movies, whats the earliest that I could re-add them should I want to?

Seem to recall that I'd need to wait 30 days?.

    Thanks
  • Hi. Have been with sky for nearly 5 years now, paying full price for all packages.
Have had trouble with channels not working properly for some time now, saying no signal received etc. Today, all channels stopped working, or were jolty and pixellated at best.
After speaking to Sky, they did a box reset, software update and boosted our signal, but still no improvement so rang back once more.
Was told it would cost £65 for an engineer, as well as having to pay extra for a new box, as we only have a standard sky box that we've had since installation in 2007.
Not prepared to pay this for a service we've paid thousands towards over the years! Had been thinking about getting a sky+ box with them, but once again, not prepared to pay vast amounts on top of the already extortionate charges, just for some bloke to spend 2 mins installing it.
Did say to them about looking at alternatives, and they said did i want to cancel now.
Not really any viable alternatives though, as can't get freeview or virgin, and don't want to change landline and broadband from O2 as they have been brilliant.
Any suggestions on how to get sky to help us out with some kind of deal?
    Cheers.

My suggestion is to go through with your cancellation....

I would be willing to be that within 3 months of it going off, you get a letter off them offering you whatever package you want at 1/2 price...

If you don't then you'll survive without it, get into reading a book or going for walks :p and will have saved yourself £££'s in the meantime.

BTW - your sky box will still receive the free channels (even the HD free ones) when your sky contract ends...
A big believer in karma, you get what you give :A

If you find my posts useful, "pay it forward" and help someone else out, that's how places like MSE can be so successful.

I'm no expert at this, but couple of thoughts:

    a) Freeview - Unless you live somewhere obvious, it's unlikely (I'd have thought) that the CS advisor Sky would realise that Freeview wasn't an option. Sure there is a postcode checker but it's not 100%

    b) Freesat - This would be a viable alternative. If you could get Sky, then you could get a Freesat. In theroy this would just be a case of getting a Freesat box and plugging it into your existing cable from your Sky dish. The only question would be whether it is your LNB or Sky Box that's actually failed.

My feeling (from reading previous posts - no experience) would be to call Sky's bluff and tell them that you want to cancel. Once you are with the cancellation team, push your long loyalty with Sky, your system has failed, you want the recording features but have decided that perhaps it's time to look at a cheaper option like a Freeview+ or Freesat+ and see what they say.

Based on previous posts and other forums, cancellations may addresss you requirements for free, although may want you to agree to a 12 month commitment with the HD Pack.

BUT - there is still a chance that they'd let you walk away. In which case it sounds like Freesat is you only option. Of course Sky may come back to you with the 30 days notice and still make an offer.

Not really much help after all...sorry.

Perhaps those with more experience can comment please?.

    Regards

    Iain

Well I went as advised on here and looked online, being a new customer I did the research it seems that I can get 3 months at half price then £76.80 for VM XL TV M BB and M telephone with film packages. Sky is about £80ish for similar deals. It seems a massive price for a new customer (Where is the sweetener for me) as people here commenting on existing customers prices and they all seemed so good. Think I would rather be an existing member.
Is there anything I could do to reduce this?
  • sky are offering free line rental for 12 months today, i had to get a bit grumpy on the phone, but they had cut me off once and passed me to three different `advisors`, just threaten to leave for virgin!!!
