bargains83 wrote:I don't think Rare have all that much of a say in it though, as Rare was the developer of these games but Nintendo was the publisher, coupled with the fact that these games were developed at a time when Nintendo owned 49% of Rare with Rare shareholders owning the other 51% before the whole business was sold to Microsoft.
Therefore I would presume its pretty much all Nintendo's decision whether to release these games on the Virtual Console or not.
Infact Donkey Kong Country is CONFIRMED to be a release title on the VC in Japan, and that was a title developed by Rare!
I hope you are right cos I really do want another crack at Goldeneye. Wiki has a little more doubt on the issue but I guess in the end money will talk.
From Wikipedia:-
"Absence of Rare titles for Nintendo Wii Virtual Console
On March 26, 2006, Matt Casamassina, Editor-in-Chief of IGN Wii, had announced in his blog that Nintendo's Wii Virtual Console service, a feature which allows players to download games from the history of Nintendo, will be "Rareless". He stated that he had "met with some Rare/Microsoft staff" while attending the 2006 Game Developers Conference, who confirmed once and for all that the Virtual Console will not see any Rare-owned licenses. This means that classic Rare titles such as Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, and Banjo-Kazooie (to name a few) may be absent from the download service; GoldenEye 007 has the added problem that the James Bond video game license is held by another publisher (currently Electronic Arts, Activision in 2007), and would require their approval as well as Rare's to be released on the system. The Donkey Kong games that were developed by Rare remain unaffected, since Nintendo retain the rights to the Donkey Kong series.
However, despite the blog post, Rare or Microsoft have yet to make an official announcement regarding this particular issue."No reliance should be placed on the above.0 -

Mmm. Interesting, but when you load up games like Banjo Kazooie, Conkers bad fur day and goldeneye on the N64. They all follow a trend of:
"Copyright 19xx Nintendo. Game by Rare"
So from this Nintendo definately own the publishing rights to these games in their original forms, but I suppose they could have thrown them back to Rare when they sold it to Microsoft, but I would have thought that unlikely. Even despite the fact they let them keep all non-Nintendo IP's.
There are also other levels to it, and it might be Nintendo stopping these games from appearing on the Virtual Console. For example Conkers Bad Fur day was released on Xbox and Banjo-Kazooie will be released on X360 in the future. Plus the fact that the Rare name is now tarnished with the Microsoft brand, allowing older versions of these games onto VC could be seen as promoting a rival console in Nintendo's eyes.
Goldeneye should really be the golden egg which should definately appear on the VC though as Rare developed it, but Nintendo was infact the licence holder for James Bond back when it was released, not Rare, and again Nintendo published it. They might have to get permission from the owners of the James Bond franchise to re-release it but I don't think it would need to involve current James Bond video game licence holders since its an old game.
I guess we'll just have to see if anything does appear, it is a pity though because Rare titles were definately some of the best back in the SNES/N64 days.0 -

It'd be great if Goldeneye / Perfect Dark were released on the VC, but they could use the wiimote as well! May be even touch the graphics up a little bit or add a couple of new levels, and if we're really dreaming then online too!
Doubt this would happen though, especially as Ninty would need to get another developer to do all this seeing as Rare probably wouldn't be able to do it seeing as they're owned by MS.0 -
I Ordered one from Gratton
8% back on quidco and 20% off first order.
so works out £19x.xx for Console and Zelda!
Where are the best deals for games?
P.S. Yet to confirm with CS if I'll get this on release day..0 -

If you want to play N64 games on the Wii, you will need to get the classic controller or use a GameCube controller to play them. You cannot use the Wii Remote. N.B. Might be worth picking up a Wavebird wireless controller for this - they may even come down in price when the wii comes out and are being sold off?!?!0 -

The word on the street is that this may not be the case. I have it from a fairly reliable source (in the know so to speak), that if they do release the goldeneye VC conversion it will be re-mastered for Wii compatability, this is one of the issues that is holding back a confirmation of release. Obviously my source may be incorrect but lets hope for the Wii remastered version.Drat and Double Drat, curse that Mr T excuse for not giving me a refund.
EVERY LITTLE EXCUSE HELPS in trying to get out of the R&R policy when the law has been broken, especially on high value items.

As far as I know Woolworths aren't taking the cash from your card until nearer the release. So - if cash is a little tight until payday you should still be able to pre-order a Wii .
(I'm sure this is on another post, but the thread is so darned large it won't hurt to say it again...)0
