joined TPS years ago, frankly it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference.
Just got called by 01792 720270 in order to see if I could reclaim PPI.
The company is We Claim U Gains and the Parent Company is
Save Britain Money Ltd
Matrix Alpha
Swansea Business Park
Northern Boulevard
Swansea
SA6 8RE
Supervisor Scott claims that the company works closely with the TPS and he will make sure my number is removed form their database. I'd be more impressed if I hadn't been promised the same thing the last time that I received a spate of calls from the same number.0 -
I received a missed call from this number (01792 306900) earlier today on a mobile which has a free Orange sim in it which we received less than 2 weeks ago. We haven't yet used the phone at all and certainly haven't given the number to anyone which proves (as far as I'm concerned) that it has to be Orange who has passed the number on.
Not, it does not mean that at all. Numbers are issued in sequence and it is relatively easy to find out the number range currently being issued. That is how these companies get your number and try to sell you phone insurance etc.
They have no idea who you are and if you ask them who they are calling they will often say they cannot do that because of the Data Protection Act. That is just a ruse of course!
They know that people who are financially active are a more likely targets for cold calls and, as your number is only 2 weeks old, it won't be registered fully with TPS even if you requested that on the day of purchase.0 -

Some years back TPS registration only lasted two years I believe. Just make sure you are still registered on the TPS website. If not, register again and you registration will last until you give up the number.0 -
I believe they would have been calling to offer you insurance on the phone so nothing to worry about to much.
If you call the number their outgoing message says they are called PPI Settlements but when they answer the phone they call themselves the Refunds Department.
They then talk a lot of b******* saying that I must have had a financial agreement for PPI otherwise they would not be calling!!!
The thing is they actually have no idea of the name of the person they are calling so how can they possibly know if I have had PPI or not?0 -
Honestly don't bother with the Telephone Preference Service (aka tps aka totally pointless service) they have about the same powers as a chocolate fireguard, in all the years its been operating they have made literally no real steps to resolve issues raised with them regards recieving unwanted calls and have the same powers as a dead battery. It just adds your number to yet another database to be sold on.
Got a smartphone, theres an app to block them, get it on the landline, get Truecall, other than that, pretty much naff all else will work.0 -
TPS have no enforcement powers, for that you need to go to the ICO or take the company to court (if you know who the company is of course).
I now have a system on my phone line that allows me to see withheld numbers. In many case I can then trace the number back to its owner, if necessary. Usually, I find that telling the person the call is being recorded and telling them their own number is sufficient to stop future calls. Failing that, I can use the 'withheld' number details and block calls from that number (or numbers within the same range)0 -
It may make you feel better, but what about the person on the other end. They are probably a youngster struggling to hold down a job they hate, but at least working and not sitting at home doing nothing.
Yes these calls are pretty annoying, but the fault lies with the company, not the person you are talking to. Good manners costs nothing.
Where are the good manners in phoning someone at home uninvited and invading their privacy?
If someone cold calls me when I am relaxing after a hard day at work or during meal times they will not get a good response. I could not care less whether they are young or old, in a job they hate or not.
Good manners works both ways!!0 -

You sound like exactly the sort of person I would be very rude to if you cold called me.
And yes, I do think you are scaremongering with the silly comment about addresses.0 -

I'm not very happy about it as we got the sim to put in a phone for the carers of our disabled daughter to use when she moves into independent living in the next few weeks. Does anyone have any ideas what, if anything, I can do about this? I'm going to start by calling Orange to complain about passing the number on.
Numbers are not new, they are recycled as there is a limited pool of numbers to draw from. Someone will have had thenumber before.
These cold calling companies generate numbers to call at random.
Therefore it's unlikely that Orange have passed the number on. I think your best bet is to ask Orange ( politely ) to issue a new number.0 -
This company had previously been selling phone insurance and also acting as an agent for the Three network.
Their modus operandi is to call NEW mobile phone numbers - which they are still doing with this PPI reclaim scam. Their charge for PPI reclaims is 36%.
I spoke to one of the sales reps at this company by phone yesterday. He was not prepared to give any details about the company - neither its name or address. When I challenged this, he claimed they were governed by the Ministry of Justice and could only give this information to its 'customers'.
The obvious question I then had was how can I enter into a contract to become a customer if I don't know the name of the company I am dealing with? He then ludicrously claimed that there is no contract!0
