If it is tax that he owes...phone the Revenue now and arrange a payment plan with them. They will be okay with you, and the sooner they know your situation the better.

Thanks for that advice, the tax is due to be paid in January, so do you think we should contact them now, or wait a few weeks and see what happens with the new business, as I would imagine it's hard to determine a payment plan when our income is unknow.

I would phone them nearer the time that its due. About a month prior to it becoming due. You will be in a better position to know what your financial situation is.

Hi Cheeselady, welcome to the boards. You'll get a lot of practical help on here, but also moral support, and you can have a good old vent if you feel like it:) Everyone on here is either in the same boat, or have made the journey and reached the other side. Some are still travelling, some have arrived, and some are just starting the journey. The light at the end of the tunnel might just be a pinprick just now - but it's there!! And it WILL get bigger:) When you feel up to it, post your SOA (statement of affairs) so we can see where we can help you. I always found it helped me to actually put it down in black and white, even if it got ripped up in frustration:o

Thanks for your reply, I have been reading the forums for a couple of weeks and have picked up so much useful information, and also from this thread am amazed at the replies I have had already, I really do appreciate them. I will try to get the SOA up as soon as I can, will have to ask DH for help with that, as he has all the info filed away so need to go through it with him.

Would it be a good idea to get the HB claim in now? Do you know how long they take in your area, (to process claims I mean)? As long as you're clear about your income now and that it will change in 5 weeks .....This is something the CAB locally could help with.

At least he has them filed! When I first started to sort out oh's debts I was presented with a large carrier bag stuffed with papers:eek: It took the best part of a day just to sort them out, to see where we where to!! It might seem obvious, but its really important to have the "paperwork" in some sort of order, it just makes things slightly easier when you need to write to companies, to have everything to hand. We couldn't afford a filing cabinet, but I had a plastic polypocket (5p each) for each debtor! It had the added effect of taking my mind of things for a while, sorting them! ;)

No, I have no idea how long it takes to process the claim, I will get DH to ring up and ask, and then we will have a better idea. Thanks for mentioning that.

Well I say filed, but think they are all in a folder, but not sure how 'filed' they are though. :o I do have some of those plastic pockets, if I need to use them, so thanks for the tip.

Really happy to hear your posts are sounding a little more positive Cheeselady. This forum got me through a really dark time at the beginning of the year. I felt so isolated and unhappy but I didn't want the facade that I was coping to ppl in the real world to crumble so I posted on the forum. The support I received really saw me through, made me see things in a different light, made me see things through the eyes of ppl who are kinder than I was being to myself. (I read through the comments repeatedly until I started to see the situation with new eyes, its amazing now to look back on how in 6 short month's things have changed for the better)

Know that there is no problem in the world that can't be resolved. Can't pay your debts at the rates you'd like? Ok so creditors will have to take reduced payments (if u aint got it they've got two choices: like it or NOTHING! ;)) Things are gonna be tough for a while? - well there's nothing like adversary to bring a family together! You're NOT letting your children down, not in the least. In fact quite the opposite, ur teaching them a vital lesson in life about the fluidity of life & money and how ppl have to be creative, work hard and ride the storm in difficult times.

Be strong, for yourself (first & foremost) and for your loving husand and children xx
