People need to remember the OP asked a question about how to go about getting his license back, not a lesson on how to sit on a moral high horse bleating pathetic narrow minded opinions like people actually care that someone thinks drink drivers should be banned for life.

If the OP had said his license had expired the moral squad would have just answered the question and moved on because they wouldn't have know the truth. Instead, because they think they're better than everyone else, they think they have the right to de-rail threads left right and centre.

OP made a mistake, just like everyone here. Everyone deserves a 2nd chance.

    Indeed, and had the decency to admit it;

Quote ..I know it was an extrememely stupid, irresponsible, dangerous and thoughtless thing to do in the first place. Unquote.

    Give the guy a break.;)

When a drink driver takes one of the members of your family or even your child/children, you will understand a drink driver should NEVER be allowed to return to the road. .
I’m pleased someone is thinking of the children

……Insurance will be recorded on MID that OP was banned for DD (Drink Driving) so underwriters could look at such information.
    Nonsense

Also, a lot of hire companies will refuse, point blank to hire any car/van etc to anyone with a conviction recorded against them for DD or DDD
Nonsense again, by the time the OP has got his licence and passed his test the DD conviction will have no effect on his ability to hire anything

OP….I think you just need to apply for a new provisional but as others have said, a call to Swansea might be the best bet.

Aren't we just a little ray of sunshine. OP already knows it was a stupid thing to do, no need to put the boot in, just answer the question.

You should have read the thread properly! OP said it was over 10 years ago! Insurance won't be a problem, you don't have to declare it to insurance after 5 years anyway, but it remains on your license for 10.

OP - give the DVLA a ring (0300 is freephone from landlines). I can't find any info on getting a provisional licence back after a ban, and I'm unsure if there's a need for a medical (depends on what your alcohol level was).

Nonsense again, by the time the OP has got his licence and passed his test the DD conviction will have no effect on his ability to hire anything Incorrect, all DD and DDD are recorded against the MID, DVLA and Police national computer for life long, think you need to research your facts before posting advice that is not correct ;)

OP….I think you just need to apply for a new provisional but as others have said, a call to Swansea might be the best bet.

Also, everyone hear is entitled to there own option, at the end of the day, if this driver or another drink driver kills your wife/husband/mother/father/brother/sister/son/daughter etc I hope that never happens, but I hope then you can still stand by your comments on this thread.

I think the OP should never be allowed to be behind the wheel again, hopefully if he does drink again, which Home Office statics show that over 60% of first time drink drivers go on to offend again by the SAME offence, that he only kills himself and not anyone I know - as clearly a lot of people do not value there lives or close ones lives.

I read about the statistic claim a few months ago on a council website, think it may have been a borough of London council? - will have a look.

    But found this :

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/road-and-rail-transport/6906321/Nearly-one-in-four-drink-drive-motorists-guilty-for-a-second-time.html

Was printed last month and shows just how high re offending of drink drivers is.
This shows that the Ministry of Justice has provide statics that show that nearly 50% of all offenders go on to re offend.

Sad thing is, many drivers that commit the offence first time will think as they didn't get caught or if they did, as in the OP's case, and didn't kill anyone, they will do it again for that quick ride home.

Drink driving KILLS, I am not trying to say the OP is the only person who has done it, but where does one continue to give second chances?!

Your advice is too, incorrect and claiming mine is is funny.

Your advice as well as some other posters in this thread is wrong, and you are telling the OP it is right??

In fact, Drink Driving (DD Offence) remains on your record for 11 years, NOT ten as you state.

    Please see here:

    http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/highways/road_safety/drinkdrive_factfile.htm

An endorsement for a drink-driving offence remains on a driving licence for 11 years, so it is 11 years before a convicted driver will have a "clean" licence again.

Meaning OP, your insurance will be through the roof !
