Don't the 2.5s have a bit of a reputation for blowing engines?

That's a minimum of about 2 grand to sort out since any engine work on a Scooby is an engine out job.

    tell me more!

Any expensive car can be a nightmare to run....especially a sports model.

anyone can buy an expensive car....but can you run it?

-Because of the repuation, it will probably be very difficult to find one that hasn't been thrashed or modified.
-4 tyres a time from around £120 each (advisable 4 at a time due to 4 wheel drive) replaced every 15k miles.
    -£400+ per year road tax
-25mpg on a run....closer to 20mpg around town - many owners around 250miles max per tank.
-limited dealer network so possible difficulties sourcing/buying parts
-not as mass produced as other similar models so parts prices may be higher.

Not trying to put you off but that's the potential nightmare. It's the same for any expensive car - not exclusive to Subaru.
The above may not be a problem to you but given you've already stated in this thread you're worried about going from 50mpg to 30mpg I'd suggest that if that's a genuine concern, then you need to avoid most cars that have decent performance.

I'd also advise you to join one of the subaru forums. They'll have cars for sale, and many geeks (in the the nicest possible way) that know all the faults and issues, and what to look for when buying. They may even have a buyers guide.

Beat me to it ;);) Which is where I came in earlier on. ie, It's always going to be a compromise between economy/performance/practicality/reliability etc etc unless you are rich.

You need 2 cars to enjoy at best, not suggesting it's possible for the op but I think it's better.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

I've owned many sporty cars....so know the fun....but also the costs.

It's simply a case of deciding if you can afford it, and then is the fun worth that extra expense.

I'd say £160 upwards if it has 18" wheels and you'll want to put some decent tyres on a car with that sort of performance.

I'm running 19s and I can get mid range tyres (kumho, falken, Avon etc) supplied and fitted for around £110 each

My eyes water each time I read prices for tyres that Audis, other German cars and I think generally large rimmed cars use. I hope and pray that mine last till I get rid of my car.

Has anyone found tyre insurance to be any use? Maybe I need a new thread....

Found the particular car I'm after.

Only do about 7k a year so tyres hopefully last longer.

2 subaru dealers within 20 miles and my local garage (walking distance) mot & service a lot too.

Insurance, tax & fuel costs are the only issue. But i'm getting the car below budget so the remainder goes towards all that.

Not heard this one, but this isn't an STI just a standard wrx. And the rep probably comes from ppl who thrash them!

    Good....but bear in mind......
Road tax wil not vary according to your mileage.
Insurance can be reduced if your mileage is low but if the car is your main one, that's unlilely to be feasbile.
You're lucky to have 2 subaru dealers so close but the local garage may not be suitable for every job - some may be specialised.
Getting the car below budget is great stuff.....but the remainder won't last long.

Take care driving it - you don't say how old you are but I get the impression you are youngish......under 25? It's a powerful car and will take some getting used to.
