Depends on how it's set up though, and what it is used for.

Correctly set up with an LSD, braced etc no reason it'd be that bad......

Plenty of FWD cars running that kind of power day in, day out.

    Regards,
    Andy

    "plenty"???
Can you list half a dozen fwd cars running 290bhp plus to their front wheels??

Obvious one is ford focus rs. What others do the same?

    Devil's advocate..............
What warranty do you get with a self built kit car?
What's the build quality like compared to a Mazda/Toyota/BMW/Porsche/Honda?
Who do you talk to to solve the niggles that every car has?
What about safety features eg airbags, abs, traction control etc?
Do you get a courtesy car when it's in the garage?

I agree that a kit car may well be faster than any of the vehicles you mention. If it's about pure raw speed then it's hard to argue.
When I was looking for a sports car I went for a 3.0Z4.
So the kit car probably would have been faster....
    but with no multiplayer cd,
    no air con,
    no power steering,
no electric windows (maybe even no windows),
no decent sized boot for shopping/golf bags
    no built in sat nav
    no leather interior
    no heated seats
    xenon headlamps
no eletric roof (possibly even no roof)
    etc etc

What's better?....the Z4 with the safety features and mod cons and 0-60 of 5.7.......or the kit car that takes hours to build, no safety features, rattles but does 0-60 in 4.7?

I agree the the lack of safety features makes it a "driver's car" and could be part of the attraction. But for me, I like a bit of comfort to go with my power.

Personally I'd go for the Z4...I'd sacrifice that bit of power for the mod cons and safety. But it doesn't make it better....just different.

The other thing I was going to say is that there is not a more cost effective way to speed than with a quality kitcar. Build 'em properly and they sell.

Let me just give 2 examples of my own experiences.

10 years back bought a 3 year old 185bhp Westfield for £7500. Ran it for a year, sold it for £7500.
2 years later the guy offered me the car back, I bought it for £5500.
Ran it for another year and then sold it on for another £7500. :T:T

The Cyclone I had untill a couple of years ago. 220bhp mild race engine, 0-60 in 4 seconds dead, completely water proof, no rattles and totally reliable, it was the companies ex show car.

Bought at 3 years old for a shade under £8000 kept and well used for 5 years, it was that good, and eventually sold back to the guy that built it for £7200.

Thats cheap performance which ever way you look at it. :D

Getting back to your post, please note I never suggested to buy a kit as an only or 1st car, we all like a few more creature comforts. But bang for bucks, as a sunnyday blaster you would be amazed. My brother owned a 2.8 Z3 and then a 3.0 Z4, he was astonished.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Can't disagree with those numbers - imopressive with or without the performance too.

I realise you didn't suggest it as an only or first car......but the OP's question indicated that he was looking for a faster car ie his only or first car......not looking for a kit or weekend toy.

Anyone running a kit car does so because they want the driving experience not a list of extras that add nothing to the driving.
    Happy chappy

    I already said so....

I made the point because one poster compared kit cars to a set of sports cars, one of which I previously owned.
    Build quality was also mentioned.
Another post stated "speed isn't everything"

A kit car probably is faster, more of a driver's car and more involving - I agree. But when other posters mentioned build quality, I'm simply saying that in an off the shelf mass produced car you get other benefits.

Just to clarify that the 290hp car is my Saab 95 aero & I didn't do all the work...just finished off what the previous owner started.

It's a monster for all the wrong reasons...

  • sadly current insurer wont insure the car I really want at all.... and even if I accept a £1k policy elsewhere I will be in effect losing 6 months ncb
  • tonight I am one step closer to the dream car. The problem is that my current insurer wont cover it. So I will need to view the car. Pay deposit. Cancel current insurance. Purhcase new policy using no claims bonus from start of the current policy. Obviously then wont be able to drive current car so will need a lift to pick up the new car. Am I missing anything here?

Possibly, just ensure your "lifts" insurance will cover him to drive "your uninsured" car. You really need to be carefull with this as it can cost you your car and him a set of points
