Hi Nuala
I am having the Panzanella tomorrow but I won't be using garlic as I don't like it. I leave it out of all the recipes.
I will cook the Shepherdless pie later this week but will substitute swede for the parsnips, as I have it in the freezer.
HTH
Thanks Allegra - I love the look of the calzone too, will check ingredients against what I've got in.Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Glad everyone's pasta funghi turned out well. We're having ours tomorrow, and I've also now got the ingredients in for shepherdless pie, so will try that on Thurday.
A random thought crossed my mind this evening on the substitutions/variations thing. Would the chicken pie work served with the veg in a big Yorkshire (minus the pastry obviously)?0 -
Hi Weezl, just saw your reply to my post on August Grocery Challenge and was going to pm you, but I'm utterly useless at spotting when I have pm'd replies, so thought I'd better post here!
Just to clarify: I LOVE your site - I think it's the best thing I've come across in a month of Sundays and I've been recommending it to everyone.
When I say that I wouldn't want to live on it for a month, therefore, can I just clarify that this is because of MY GREED. I will go on and blatantly steal every recipe on there - my daughter is a veggie and it's nice to see some appetising-looking veggie recipes we can all enjoy. We had the onion tart on Saturday (though I admit we probably had far more cheese than you specified) and it was yum - even if we were up all night as a result (I always forget that the reason I don't make onion tart more often is that lots of onions act as a diuretic)! Delish though and worth the extra stroll to the loo in the middle of the night. My DH thought he'd had too much coffee before bed...
If I had only £100 to feed my family of four, I would use the site to the letter (and be thanking God daily for your existence and calling down blessings on yourself and your family). But I am lucky enough not to be in that position, so I will incorporate lots of your recipes into my meal planning, combined with perhaps some more expensive ones of my own (that's not to say you don't get the blessings too, of course - you do :rotfl:). That doesn't mean that there is anything "wrong" with the cheaper recipes or even intrinsically better about more expensive recipes - quite the reverse.
I think the "problem" - if there is one - is mine: I just CAN'T follow a planner to the letter, that's all. I would go with the veggie option on the planner - but I keep hens, so free range eggs are "free" for me; I grow lots of fruit and veg; I have a store cupboard that would see us through World War III (don't get me started on my husband's siege mentality - I keep saying to him, it was your MOTHER who grew up in occupied Paris during the war, WE can get hold of food quite easily...). As a result, I can "afford" to have all my favourites AS WELL (lucky me) without necessarily spending more. And of course, I still would want to incorporate all my family's own tried and trusted favourites, otherwise they'd rebel against it.
Believe me, the LAST thing I meant to imply was any criticism of the site. You are doing a magnificent job, the recipes are great - I hope you'll soon feel the benefit of all these extra blessings being rained down on you by your grateful public! :T0 -

Evening all! Pasta funghi- umm, it was okay, not amazing to be honest but I think I am quite a perfectionist when it comes to food
A couple of things I thought
1) What about the olives? I now have a dry jar of olives.
2) Why on earth do I need 1 frying pan, one saucepan, one pasta pan and a baking dish (and something to cook peas in), what kind of washing up sadist are you Weezl
Not sure I would make it again (the steak I had which my housemate gave me was pretty good!)God is good, all the time

The olives would only have been in brine. Fill up the jar with salty water! Or (much nicer) fill up with decent olive oil and leave to marinate, then use the oil for cooking (oops, that probably rather defeats the object, doesn't it...:rotfl:)
Personally, I would have fried off some garlic with the onions and mushrooms, sprinkled it with the flour and chilli and then made up the sauce with milk, but I think it was a vegan recipe, wasn't it? And there would still have been three pans to wash up0 -
A few folk on MSE recently have said they couldn't only/just eat what's on the CFR site.
Can anyone help me to understand this more? We now have 100 recipes, although 7 are pretty much duplicates due to the two planner nature.
This seems quite a lot to me, and a good balance of breakfasts/lunches dinners etc...
I just wondered if anyone had insights about this
I do believe I could follow CFR to the letter
However, full cupboards and freezers do mean that I dont have to at the moment.
I like to get a bargain at the supermarkets, so, if I get cheaper fresh produce, I take advantage of that.
I am not very good at meal planning on my own...as sometimes I cant be bothered to cook, or dont fancy what I have decided to have for a meal that day.... but I do tend to do better, if someone else has decided what I am having
Its hard for me to explain... but I find it has a similar feeling to someone else cooking for you... it always tastes bettereuronorris wrote: »Hi Weezl!
I tried out the sweetcorn fritters on Sat, which tasted delicious, but didn't stay together too well when I was trying to cook them. So, I'm just wondering if you know where I went wrong.
I halved the amounts detailed in the recipe as there is only me and my OH. And I added a little extra flour as I don't have any garam masala (still trying to figure out where I can buy this here - there must be somewhere - a speciality shop I think). Anyway, I'm wondering if I didn't have enough flour in there. Do you think that would be it?
Otherwise, they were a huge success. My OH was dubious when I was preparing and cooking, but he really loved the taste (as did I)! Unusual for him and anything with veggies! So, I'm keen to get it right next time.
Thanks.

I am not sure if you would be able to get the ingredients to make your own Garam Masala ?
Hopefully that may help, if you can
My pasta funghi was tasty
I had tested it before... so tweaked it a little today.
I used smoked paprika instead of chilli.... purely because I didn't fancy "hot", and a little more garlic than stated
... and made it more saucy.
I used wholemeal pasta.
I also economised on the washing up, by cooking the mushrooms and onions in with the pasta for the last couple of minutes
I served it with 80g of side salad, as I had that in....
I expect later in the month, I would have peas/corn/whatever is in the freezer
Panzanella
Not so sure about this one...but I will try it tomorrow.
The only trouble is, I havent made any bread yet... and I dont really have time to either
Do you think it would work with bagels or nan bread, from the freezer ?:o
I do hope so, cos I will be using one or the other
Bedtime.. up at stupid oclock:wave:

Got to agree with Sian on this, I would personally never bake pasta so wont be using a baking dish again but it did seem like a lot of washing up for quite a simple dish.
Should we maybe tweek it a bit so you only use two pans?:o
Im doing Panzanella tonight and Calzone on Friday-so if any one wants to join feel free.We are also doing another batch of forgasse and hm garlic bread, im slowly getting into the swing of bread making. However we have to leave ours to prove for about two hours-anyone know how to reduce this time?
Allegra loving the batch cooking. I am beginning to get O/s savvy and saving containers etc....to store things in as I only have 4 tupperware boxes at the mo.
Also your kitchen is sooooooooooo tidy I am very impressed.
Have a good day all:)
