  • Hi Jellie

Your thoughts about being "busy busy busy" ring true a bit with me too.

Sometimes, we all forget to step things down a gear and enjoy simple peasures, like going for a stroll at lunchtime, reading a book that makes you laugh or taking your dog / cat / pet of choice for a walk. :)

A famous economist, I think it was John Maynard Keynes, said "In the long run, we are all dead..." so find time to livea ltlle today rather than building castles in the sky for tomorrow.

Still on my DFW trek...good luck with slaying the "mortgage dragon".

  • Hi Jellie

OH is away and I'm bookmarking lots of diaries to read as I get terribly bored when I'm home alone! Looking forward to seeing how you're tackling things. PS Just spilt red wine everywhere!!!!!!! Eeeek!
  • Hello Jellie,

I quite agree that being busy does not equate to being successful. But then neither does being idle so the secrets really are prioritisation and delegation, both of which I am trying to work on. And people who drain away your enthusiasm by moaning all the time are a real impediment to success. Which is why I like this board, full of like minded goal orientated people.

Very good luck to you, enjoy the weekend,

Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D

hi Chris- thanks for dropping by! You are so right even in the toughest times learning to enjoy simple pleasures helps bring happiness.

Hi coldstream. Lovely to have a new visitor. Hope you don't get too bored with OH away. Did you manage to clean the spill ok?

Hello SSS! Can't scroll down to write below your message so I hope you can spot this. I agree that idleness doesn't get you far. I think the key is balance. Also I very much need to learn how to use time more effectively to reach my goals. As a perfectionist I can spend too long trying to get something just right when the situation only requires me to do something good enough if that makes sense!

Managed to spend a very productive couple of hours getting the house clean. As I haven't been well enough for housework for a few weeks I thought it would take far longer but with some help from OH we sped through.

Went out for lunch and then friends came over so a pleasant day. On the money side we've got a few thing need doing in the house. First off £1700 on some new double glazing. I find it really difficult spending out on things like this but it will help with noise reduction and hopefully heating too.

Sewing going ok. So far have finished my skirt and tunic and am onto my second skirt. I'm quite amazed that teaching myself I've managed to make wearable clothes straight off! I'm trying to master several key items which are easy to sew and make them up in different fabrics. Although the patterns are easy they use stretch materials so not really easy sewing. Once I feel I've got the hang of these I've got some more difficult patterns. I need to try and master blind hems and zips!

  • I feel full of admiration Jellie that you are training to teach and you are already trying to think about work/life balance. I never managed it myself, and it just leads to stress and unhappiness. I understood fully your post a bit further up about trying to be just good enough. I hope you find that balance you crave.:)

I also fully appreciate the feeling about not wanting to spend the money on the windows. I have found it a hard few months paying for the kitchen/bathroom/boiler/cavity wall insulation/new appliances, and most of the money was given to us. Think i have a bit of a problem. One thing we have said though, is we are so glad we did it now it is done. If you are not getting in debt for it, then you should do what you can to make now more comfortable. We have lived with impractical kitchens and bathrooms for years and it is bliss now it is getting sorted.

Thanks Michelle. Here's to finding balance  any tips gratefully received :D
I'm already a teacher. When I was training I had no work life balance as as well as doing a PGCE I had a second job!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates paying for such things. You are right about it being better once they are done. We already have enough money in our offset to pay for the work so no debt needed. I guess I need to start thinking of the house as an investment, sorting things out early, servicing the boiler etc should mean we are less likely to have bigger problems which cost more.

Having spent a few years as a DFW I guess I'm still adjusting to life as a MFW. I have learnt many valuable lessons in money management and ways to cut costs to try and reduce the mortgage. However, there are times where spending money makes sense in terms of improving our lives or taking care of the house. I just have a sense of guilt when spending large amounts of cash! I'm glad you're reaping the benefits of spending some cash on your place.
