  • I am a teacher and earn a good wage, but I do tend to work shedloads of hours outside of school and it's quite a stressful job in the main.

The holidays do make up for it a bit, it's true, but I don't think you can take that kind of stress long-term...

Oh, I don't know. I work in a school and a colleague has just retired after 38 years' service there. There are several others with over 30 years.
  • We are looking at salaries - but how many hours do people do to have to bring in their income

Good point regularsaver1. Perhaps we could go through the thread again quoting our hourly rates?

    Mine's about £15 p.h.

Mine varies quite a bit. Normal rate is £6.68, next month going up to £6.88. When I work on bank holiday or Sundays rate is £13.76. Early morning rate is £9-ish (not actually sure exact figure:o )

I don't mind doing extra hours to help out as I get paid hourly. Some of my friends are expected to work extra when needed and don't get any overtime pay. One of my friends worked out that with the extra work she does, she is getting paid about £3.90 her hour!

You know how most people hate call centres? Well erm.. I manage one for a living! And yes, I fell into it!

    £20 p/hr, 9-5, 37.5 hrs p/wk.

No A levels, no degree, no direct quals, but common sense, good people skills, a hunger for learning, a 'can do' attitude and a desire to get to the top. (I might be on my way..2nd interview for a fab opportunity coming up! :D )

I'm a manager of a team of 5 auditors - earn just over 35.5k but because, if I'm in the office, I do 12 and 1/2 hour days hourly rate is only £10.94. (I realise 'only' is a relative term, but the travel turns what looks like a well paid job into an average one).

As I can't increase my salary (although pay rise soon - any more than 2% will be a miracle) I need to increase my hourly rate so trying for no more than 2 days a week in the office. Assuming I do 7.5 hours the other days this reduces weekly hours to 47.5 and hourly rate to £14.40 not that I'm sad enough to work this out you understand :p
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Supposed to be the usual 37.5 per week however I always end up working more which I do not get paid for. If I don't do it people complain and no one else will do it. £12 per hour.

  • and there are other benefits that come with the job - like my manager gets company car, - all his petrol paid for and also parking on a season ticket

i of course have to pay

its like i could go to another bank and get maybe more money, but would have to work more hours. and they don't get same bonus and shares - catch 22
