  • I'm a student nurse on a basic of 15k as I'm seconded by my local NHS trust. I also Nanny as this is what I used to do before my present job. I regularly do approx 14-30 (it depends on work load) hours extra a week. My average take home again varies, but I haven't bought home less than £1600 since October 2005. This does though come at a price my last bank holiday off was Boxing Day 2005. I always choose to work bank holidays as it's double pay at £23ph. At the moment though I'm turning work away as I need to study.

Fine, but how do you get on with all that Indian Food?
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

I know the feeling. Not like you can just say 'screw this', and go and become a chartered accountant. (OK, you 'could', but would you really want to? lol)

If you've got 80'000 words done, send some sample chapters off to some agents/publishers. If its fiction you'll need an agent, get the writers and artists yearbook it lists them in there. Send an e-mail first outlining your script/plots/idea etc and asking if you could submit, ignore the knockbacks as fiction is more difficult to get into, but it can be done. I sent off inquiries to around 15 agents last year (many had full books werent looking) and only one was interested and asked for material, but its that one that counts. If its non-fiction approach the publishers with a proposal, if they like they'll ask for sample material, so submit that and then again if like they'll send out for review and then you'll get the yes or no.
Once you've broken into it and have contacts and a publisher who likes your stuff its easier to get listened to, sometimes its a case of timing, my first prpoposal was accepted first time by the first publisher I approached just because it was what they were already looking for, I was really lucky.
But it just proves it can be done, if you love writing do it send it off and if you want to pm me for a chat feel free.
    Best of luck:beer:

In that case, I should finish my synopsis and send it off with the first three chapters. Cheers.

  • I am a Childrens Nurse, also qualified in General Nursing but don't like looking after adults so much. I work 2 nights a week (18.75 hours) and pick up about a grand a month after deductions. Hourly rate is £12.68 and get extra for 30% nights. I am about to up my hours to 3 nights now ds1 is at school, pay should got up to £1500 ish a month but childcare will double to £260 a month. Does anyone use childcare vouchers? My employer has just started offering them as a salary sacrafice thing, but am not sure if it will benefit me.
  • Hey All, I'm a Delivery Office Manager for Royal Mail - 41.5 hours a week and mostly have to work Saturdays (yes this is being typed from work).
I start at 05:00 and usually finish by 13:00..... the job can be very very stressful, and at 27 I never thought I would be in charge of nigh on 100 people and a multi million pound budget.
How did I get into it? Ha ha. I was totally and utterly broke after coming out of uni, and had had agency work down in Bristol with Royal Mail. So I enquired in Leeds (nearest place for jobs from Huddersfield that I could get to), and managed to blag a part time job as a postman. I told the interviewer I could drive when he asked me how I was going to get in in the morning from 20 miles away (Huddersfield). I didn't realise that the only train that could get me there was at 02:47. So for 9 months I got up at 02:20, 6 days a week for a weekly take home of £112.47. And there was a waiting list for my job!

Anyway, I stuck at it, because if nothing else, I had pride about supporting myself. And I kept on putting myself forward for things...

I have been in the business now 5 years-1 month ago. And the wages I hear you ask?

My take home is £2,000, get paid for mileage, get free postage (!) and thats aboutn it for the benefits. At the moment, it will do....but sooner or later, with the skills this job has given me, I will move on to a more lucrative job involving some sort of logistics...

My degree by the way was in Multimedia Design and Virtual Reality...and not once have I even put on my CV that I have a degree.
