  • I'm a Human Resources Policy Advisor for an independent foster care agency for children with complex needs. I'm studying part time and i'm in my fourth and last year now studying at masters level. This year I am doing Employment Law and People Management. It's been a lot of hard work!

My take home pay is £1160 after tax, ni and pension which for HR is not great really but I knew this was a career that wouldn't give me the big bucks overnight because you can't really progress in HR without exposure and experience to new things and new situations to deal with. I've only been in HR for 3.5 years and I am working my way up and getting a lot more involved in complex issues. The upside is I know when I graduate I can be earning a lot more plus its a job I really love and there isn't a single day where I don't learn something new so no amount of money can buy that.

Money is all relative though, if I earned more I'd probably only spend more!
    Debt at highest £8k

Debt free date July 2009 :j
  • Im a stay at home mum. Dh earns 30k a year in the sleezy world of finance. we are not in debt yet .. and hope to stay that way ..... (apart from our mortgage) we do have equity in 10 other properties (all mortages will be paid off in 5 years, 5 are mortgage free) which are all rented out, so i guess we are luckier than some on here, as we dont take an income from those, we save it.

Dh used to earn in excess of 3 times this amount and he invested well knowing his then job wasnt for ever. 5-6 years ago you could still pick up 2 bed flats and 3 bed maisonettes in south wales for as little as £10k !

Until a couple of weeks ago I was a full time retail supervisor. My basic was 6.50 an hour, 39 hours a week. But with the occasional overtime, Christmas bonus, profit share, and time and a half rate for every other Sunday my average take home pay was just under a grand a month. Also had final salary pension.

In a bid to better myself I started temping 2 weeks ago. My first assisgnment for civil service was £7 an hour and 35 hours a week. My next job for local council is £6.50 and 37.5 hours a week. Which works out exactly the same money per week. This money is the same as the basic I earned in retail but with no bonuses. So I'm still working as a Saturday girl in the shop. Will also give me a cushion in case there is an odd week when I'm not temping. I can't tell you my take home pay yet as I'm on emergency tax. :(

Hopefully temping will lead to bigger and better things...

As some others have pointed out, what's coming in isn't the whole story. Sometimes what's going out is even more important. A few months ago I was earning less than 500 quid per month (a bit more now) and my wife was earning nothing at all. We have two kids and get some benefits but it's not a lot of extra money.

I, like many of you, have lots of qualifications including an honours degree. I also have several years of reasonably good experience in my field.

We live in quite and expensive house but only because we were lucky enough to buy it about ten years ago. So our mortgage is tiny by modern standards.

However, we don't smoke, I ride my bike to work, we don't want Sky TV, we don't want mobile phones and I cook proper food rather than buy expensive TV dinners.

So I earn less than most but my outgoings are tiny too. I actually think I'm quite well off!!

i work in international shipping - started out on 14K - 3 years later now earn double that but my god it has been a rough, tough 3 years and there's no way in hell i'd put myself through it again but i'm proud of my accomplishments. not many other ppl can accomplish what i have in a similar time frame but i think there's a very good reason for that!

kat - let me know what experience you have and what kind of work you're looking for as i know some pretty damn good agencies that'll look after you and find you good work........(oh and good rates of pay)

I've had a few jobs since I left Uni. I ran up quite a bit of debt from study and general over-spending, luckily I'm able to cope with these now.

I started at £16k moving to £18k within a year in my early 20's doing office IT. I then got into some IT consultancy which varied up to £400/day. I've now got a new product specialist position which pays about £42k including bonuses plus pension, healthcare etc.

I believe that there's a certain amount of luck with jobs. There can be wild variants in what different companies pay for basically the same position. Also, timing can be crucial, if you happen to join a company with a higher staff turnover and you stick around for a couple of years, you can find yourself getting promoted quite quickly. I know a few lazy people who have fallen into well paid jobs and don't particularly like them, but I think realise they might struggle in another company. Equally, some people I know, have no qualifications as such, but have started at the bottom and worked very hard to get where they are.
  • I also have a degree which I've done nothing with in ten years! But I'm an adminstrator with the NHS also and I earn nearly triple this - admittedly I'm in London so get an extra allowance but I'm interested to know what job you actually do. Medical Secs in my Trust are on a Band 4 which is more than 11k, PAs to Directors on Band 5 and CE PA/Board Secs on Band 6. Check your internal vacancy bulletin and apply for other jobs within your Trust, or even look for ones in your local SHA. With a degree and good technical skills you should be able to move up the scale pretty quickly - I started as a temp PA two years ago and have moved up four times since then. Once you're at that sort of level you can look towards moving away from secretarial stuff and into operational management. Another key thing in the NHS is to be interested - ask your manager if you can get involved in some project work, even if it's in a supporting role. Also ask for development training, Exec Directors are allowed to get personal coaching, so are you!! You could also try getting a mentor.

People knock the NHS but there's some great opportunities and the benefits outweigh those in most companies

    good luck!

Quick, how can I get a job in the NHS?? I'm seriously jealous! Training, mentors, proper pay scales and a structure - bring it on.

I'm currently employed as 'office manager' for a publishing company but as there are only 2 other full-time members of staff I do just about everything, 37.5 hours a week, 20 days holiday a year. I'm 41 and my take-home pay is £1500 a month. Highly unlikely to get a payrise unless we make a profit this year, rather more likely that at some point next year we will run out of cash and the business will close, and I will be out on my ear... Yes, I do enjoy it, but the instability of working for a small family-run company is getting me down.

so any links to job applications for the NHS would really be much appreciated.
