a lot of babies died, infant mortality was high
at the end of the day, no-one has to take the advice.. i don't know why people get so funny about it
if WHO were aware of babies becoming ill and that a death had been attributed to formula feeds not being made correctly, and then didn't adjust their guidelines and let people carry on they would be negligent
its advice, not the law!
eta - if you are leaving bolied water in the fridge and adding formula when its cold then none of the potential bacteria in the formula will have been killed off
water has to be 70 degrees for this to happen
A lot of babies were saved by formula once the manufacturers actually got it right (initially, formula made a lot of babies ill and did kill them)
Personally I hated breastfeeding, tried it with my first and after 3 months of bleeding nipples, throwing up with the let down reflex, health visitors telling me I couldnt feed her in the way I felt comfortable (rugby position) and had to do it the way that bloody hurt, nights of her screaming until I woudl try to express and find I had nothing to feed her with....
I ended up with severe PND and can never get that time back with her. Thank god for formula in my case.
I never took the risk with future babies, bonding with them was far more important to me than using the dreaded formula. I express fed them for the first few months instead.
Breast feeding is natural for sure, it doesnt mean it comes naturally to every person or baby.
I find it very sad how in this dy and age, it all seems to be one great big competition, parenting. What happened to women supporting each other? Part of the reason I stopped bothering with forums about parenting.:starmod:Sealed Pot Challenge Member 1189:starmod:0 -
Similar to us.
6 bottles with boiled water put in fridge. Formula added when needed, 30-45 seconds in microwave and shaken well.
This is pretty much the same as us except I use boiling water to warm up the bottle (don't own a microwave!).
The WHO recommend making up each feed freshly they do also state that if it's not possible to do that then the best alternative is to make the milk up, cool it and then put it in the fridge. If there were any significant risks with doing this they wouldn't suggest it in their advice...0 -

my bf'ing freind came round yesterday and said ' i'm just glad i don't live in a country where i would have to feed the neighbours baby if she couldn't'
the onl;y reason i posted all that advice was because the OP had got some conflicting advice and i wanted her to know what the guidleines are now

Oh I am not justifying, that would mean I would doubt my own decisionsjust pointing out that what some say is totally natural doesnt always turn out that way for other women and their babies. I have heard of babies whom could never latch on, with no tongue tie, a few babys allergic to breast milk (but also formula), we ARE lucky we have choice, its just very sad that mums need to then argue about that choice, rather than just actually getting on with raising their babies the best they can.

Hi OP. I am a man and I haven't actually done any bottle or water preparation. A ready bottle was always given to me by my wife when its my turn to feed the baby. If I remember it correctly, the milk was always a bit lukewarm. I asked her just now why it was so, she said it helps in preventing/ minimizing colic. She said she adds a bit of hot water to a previously boiled water which has cold down. She actually keeps two kettles in the room. One has the cooled down water and one that is kept hot, like a thermos.
She was also using glass bottles. She said they were the best.

In answer to the original question...... I only ever warmed a bottle if it came straight from the fridge. otherwise it was always at room temperature.
I didn't add the powder until I was ready to give the bottle. Until then it was boiled, cooled water in the bottle.0
