  • It was a licenced taxi outside the hotel apparently there were two others in taxi bay too. Unfortunatly he did not take in the firm name. Why is a licenced coach different to a licenced taxi, its still a vehicle that carrys fares. Yes son made it clear to taxi chap he wanted the cash machine to pay him, He explained he had no cash on him, and needed it to pay him and even chased the taxi down the street, waving his arms and shouting, to stop
  • Check the policy document. Tesco travel classes attended baggages if its attended "by you", As it wasn't attended by him, thats the exclusion they will use.

So what should have the boy done? Asked Pedro to pull over at the ATM and also to open the boot so he can take his suitcases to the ATM with him in case Pedro decides to do one?

Sorry, doesn't seem a likely scenario.

I think most people would have done as this boy did, and I think the insurance company should pay up, on the basis that the theft occurred without the boy having taken any unusual or unreasonable risks.

It isn't different. If you have your luggage stolen while on a coach your insurance won't cover you as your bags are unattended. However, the coach company would be liable to pay compensation, assuming you have evidence that they stole your luggage. Similarly if you have evidence against the taxi firm (which you don't), then you could claim against them.

Thats exactly what I would have done - it's simply not worth the risk to leave your belongings with someone you don't know. No, the insurance shouldn't pay out because he did take an unnecessary and totally avoidable risk.

I would be pretty disappointed if my insurance company took the same attitude as your son's has. Please ignore all the stupid point-scoring posts above. They're training to be in the school debating society so like to nit-pick at posts and then all gang up to point score. When we were in Venice we travelled by bus to the airport. When the bus stopped en route to pick-up/let off passengers we were a bit concerned in case someone ran off with our luggage. As it was, like all the others on the bus, we stayed on the bus and the luggage was still there. Presumably our cases would also have been classed as "unattended" but I would have been very surprised if the insurance had said they wouldn't cover us. I would really pursue this with the insurance company. did your son get a police report/crime number?

Just posting facts - if you disagree with the facts then counter-argue them, rather than just abuse those posting them :)

so you'd seriously take all your luggage out of a taxi and have it stood next to you on the street while you use an ATM? What a stupid thing to do! Very likely you'll get it nicked while you're getting your money out.

OMG just realised it's school holidays!
  • fred you are right just read policy and it states must be attended by you at all times unless locked in hotel room or safe deposit box interesting it does not metion airport, could that mean he has to attend even in the hold. It seems so wrong I mean I have travelled with 3 small kids had to take them to get a trolley to put luggage on how could I have dragged all that luggage and kids to trolley park. The same applies with elderly people. I understand if he had flagged down a passing car, popped round the corner for a quick drink. But a licenced taxi. My son said he was within sight and talking distance of the chap. Travellers beware.

That's true. I'd have left them in the safety of the taxi's boot, rather than bring them out on the street beside me for some toe rag to pinch as I'm using the ATM.
