Erm - patchwork duvet cover anyone? All the fun of patchwork - but without all the hard work of actually quilting. Just sew around 3 1/2 sides and pop a couple of ties on the bottom edge.

Mmmm, now there's an idea! :j I had envisaged a really traditional quilt with an intricate pattern (the circular ones - I don't know the correct name) but that will take me ages! I may well do a quick patchwork duvet to tide me over first. In fact, I have a spare duvet cover that I could maybe just attach some strips of fabric over the ends to make it look a bit more homely, it's only plain cream and I've got so many odds of fabric I could use. A few buttons and strips of ribbons here and there.....mmmm......

Must concentrate on curtains first though - I was painting with my Ipod last night and suddenly thought the sight of me in my overalls jiggling was probably not appreciated from the people in the street. :o

I've decided I'm only going to make dress curtains as they'll be floor length and will cover the radiator, so I'll have to run up a blind as well. I'm in two minds whether to line them though, there's no need but it's such lovely fabric that I wonder whether it would be prudent to prevent fading in case I want to re-use them in the future?

Anyway, update. I couldn't measure up as hubby has lost the curtain pole somewhere in the loft. I was going to err on the side of caution and guess with a generous extra amount but it seemed wasteful so I'm going to badger him tonight. :D

"For the bottom edge I cut the button-up section off one of the shirts and fitted it into the edge of the duvet - instant closure with very little effort!"

Brilliant idea! I have also made a cover with the folded back bit you get in a pillow case, then sewn ribbon to the opposite edges and fastened it with a bow. Does that make any sense at all?

And I also have a bed cover made from strips of fabric, not squares (I pieced some of the strips in similar fabric to make them long enough). I graduated the colours from dark to light, and backed it with the cheapest sheet I could find.

But my challenge is NOT to have fun rooting through my collection of interesting bits, but to make the skirt and jacket I finally got round to cutting out.

sheng719: i'm making christmas "stockings" too, only, as we don't have a proper fireplace to hang them from, i'm making .. well i suppose you could call em christmas sacks. They're for adults, rather than children, with small things inside em so they aren't very big, but they're made of patchwork squares. the idea is that they looks as though they came from a 70s santa's workshop kinda thing. lol.

thought i'd pass that on, maybe you can use up scraps the same way...

p.s. getting there with my list, did the table runner and napkin rings yesterday, more lavender bags, rice bags.. about to do some more sewing!!
  • Ooooh not done any sewing for ages (cept for usual hems/buttons etc). I did the whole dining table thingy last year and it looked good.

Going to make pump bags for my church's Outreach and Awareness project. Other than that I bought some Super King Size sheets on holiday in America to make into duvet covers. We've just decorated the hallway, so need a new door curtain, so could add that to the list. Knitting a scarf at the mo for my sis's pressie so that's got me tied up at present.

Good luck in all your sewing timetables.

  • Hee hee, well I'm getting lots of sewing in today - work is dead so I'm sitting in the office with my tapestry! :p My mini aim is to finish the brown I'm using. :D

  • Well how did everyone do? I am ashamed to say I have measured up and that's all. :( I bought some more fabric on Friday though. ;) I've now got a couple of things I need to make for Xmas pressies so the curtains are going on the back boiler I'm afraid. I need to make some kind of gardening tool holder/pouch/belt with some cheap hessian I bought which I think will take a while....

I decided to carry on cutting out, so I have 5 garments ready to sew in the New Year.

But I am halfway through sewing a mohair jacket (before it frays itself into a pile of threads) and I made 2 scarves.

Not great, but I did put my cutting out table to good (ish) use, and have wrapped all my presents.
  • Only just seen this post today and wish I had seen it when it started  as its just what I needed to inspire me!

I have sooooooo much sewing to do:

    1. Pair of jeans to take up and in for a friend
    2. Repair a torn top for another friend
    3. Take up trousers for the Works Christmas doo (already cut but not pinned)
    4. Make some crochet squares my Mum made into 2 cushions for her & 2 for me.
    5. Sew a nightdress up that annoyingly keeps coming undone!
    6. Make a large set a bedroom curtains (for very large windows)
    7. Plenty more that I can't think of at the moment!

Though the challenge is over I think I will do my own personal challenge to get this done by next Sunday and the rest of my sewing (not mentioned here) by Christmas. Thank you for the inspiration though! :T I'll definetly join in with the next challange.
