    Seriously though, even if you managed to decompress the drive once you have a caddy, that doesn't mean that it will work and therefore boot up correctly. The MBR might still be corrupted.

    I hope so. It's just the first line of his post that really annoyed me. If I had access to a caddy, then I would have used it by now.

    After loads more messing about, I've decided I'm giving up on it.
    The owners aren't particularly grateful, not very patient and are seriously getting on my wick!
    They can have it back like it was and take it somewhere where they'll be charged for getting it fixed.
