Bootmgr is compressed

You would have been better getting hold of a WinPE instead of Linux...but give it a go anyway if this linux will mount the Windows C drive...
On the linux you've booted from is there a firefox or notepad application??
If there is open it up...
Doesn't matter about using that program so don't worry if the internet doesn't appear...
Click File
Click Open
See if you can navigate to the C drive
Right Click (And if it will let you, go to properties then you can uncompress the drive from there...will take some time though)
The reason your niece has this is as previously mentioned, the C drive has been compressed...however, Netbooks like this 4489 and the 4211 have a built in recovery partition which sits on a Vista backend...(The designers were future-proofing the software for when 7 was released on the netbooks)..That's why you're getting a Vista error whilst running XP
If you struggle with the above, try getting hold of a copy of WinPE that will mount the Windows drive...
If all else fails...:eek:0 -

It's not at all difficult to get hold of a copy of Windows PE 2.0. It's the creating of a Bootable USB drive that will be the stumbling block. The inexperienced could actually end up formatting the wrong drive during it's creation.0 -
Quick and possibly dim question.
I have a cross-over cable and could connect the two machines together (I think).
Could I use that to uncompress the drives?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Anyone, please?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

I think that you aren't getting replies, because you have already been given the easiest possibilities. If you can't work with them there is hardly any point in spending time directing you to even more complicated solutions.
Think about backing up the drive and running a Factory Restore or Clean Install. You can use something like Hiren's Boot CD(via USB) or you can just take the drive out and put it in a caddy(link)(£3.75)0 -
OK, I've made a USB boot disk using a Xubuntu and Unetbootin.
Just tried it and I'm still getting the same message about bootmgr.
Looks like I've hit a dead end.
And I don't have a caddy to remove the HDD from the netbook to sort it that way, which is why I suggested the cross-over cable.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Just tried what? You should have entered into a Xubuntu environment and from there been able to back up files etc. What happened to the possible solution that I sent to you? Did you try it? If you used Windows to compress, you'll likely need Windows to decompress.
You don't have a caddy because you haven't purchased one.Maybe you can borrow someone's external CD drive or buy a 5.25" caddy for £16 and convert any existing PC DVD drive into an external drive.
Starting to look like a hassle?0 -
Just tried booting into a Xubuntu environment and it didn't work.
I looked at the stuff you sent me and couldn't get it to work. I've been messaged about using BartPE so I'm going to try that.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Oh !!!!!!......
Take the HDD out, plug it into your desktop and boot your machine.
Click on "my computer", then right click the drive and select properties, uncheck the box that says "compress this drive to save disk space."
Switch off your machine, put the HDD back where it belongs and Bobs ur auntie....To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0
