Hi all

I've just been handed my niece's Advent Notebook, model 4489, which I think is running some form of Vista (I can't read the label on the bottom).
They've done something to try and get more space on the HDD and now there's a message saying

BOOTMGR is compressed
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

As it's a Notebook, there's no drive bays and they can't find any of the paperwork on it.

Anyone know a way round this?

Thanks in advance.

The notebook doesn't have a CD drive and I can't find a way to get to the command line.
It won't even go to Safe Mode.

Recovery partition maybe, believe you need to press F8 at boot on most laptop. I assume you have a netbook?

    Tried both F8 and F6.
About the only thing I can get into is BIOS and I don't fancy changing any of the settings in there.
It says Notebook on the bottom of the machine, but I would assume it's a Netbook as there's no CD-Drive.

    Try F11 as well.

This is a common problem with people compressing their C drive which has the OS system files on it. As long as you can get into the recovery partition all you need to do is this:

    Click 'Repair my Computer'
    Select your OS installation, c
Click the button that says 'Load Drivers' which should bring up an explorer-style drive browser
Right-click on the C drive and deselect 'Compress this Drive', which should still be ticked on.
Select "Apply", and "Apply to subfolders/files"
    Reboot.

I can't get into anything as far as I can see.
I've tried F10 and F11 with no luck.
F10 does nothing while F11 gives me a boot menu, but all the options on there end up with the same error message or take me into BIOS.

I can set it to boot from CD/DVD Rom, Floppy, HDD, (all USB) or network, so that would appear to be a yes.
Any ideas where I can get USB-based recovery media from?

Forgot to mention, my machine is running Windows XP if it makes any difference?
