If you are sure that your windows disc is legitimate and that you followed the simple instruction at the Flashboot website, you can go ahead with the Repair Install

I bought the machine originally from Tiny (please don't laugh!)
I had problems with it from the word go and that's the disc they sent me.
It has T-Rex printed on the front of the disc on a yellow background.

I've got the USB stick ready (I think), but what if the netbook is running Vista?

    What's the matter you??
Forgot to mention, my machine is running Windows XP if it makes any difference?

In addition to this the Advent 4489 runs Windows XP Home.

The story that it's running Vista and you can't read the label properly simply doesn't ring true. With that spec it will just about run a fresh install of XP SP3. So which is it??

If you are convinced that it has Vista installed(I'm sceptical), you'll need to begin the process again, but this time with the Vista Recovery Disc. But I can't imagine anyone would be so stupid as to try to install Vista on a Netbook.

It's not my netbook and I can't read the sticker.
Is there any other way I can find out (apart from asking the owner)?

It's an MSI U90. Watch the video. Press 'Delete' to enter the BIOS to see how much RAM is currently installed. If it's 512MB, forget about Vista.

You can use Pendrive Linux to create a 'Live' USB drive to enable you to take a look at the contents on the hard drive. So that you can see whether it's XP Home or Vista. You can back up files if necessary.

OK, got the Flashboot thing to boot.
It's giving me two option, neither of which seems appropriate.
    1. Edit Partition
    2. Install Windows

All I want to do is to decompress all the files on the HDD.

There is a partition which restores the machine to factory settings if I can get to it.
If necessary, that will do the job.

Is it XP or is it Vista??

It appears that Flashboot may format the disc to FAT32 before continuing to Windows Setup, so it might nor be suitable for a Repair Install.

I'm going to assume XP from the above links.
Is it possible to use the PenDrive Linux to decompress the drive?
If it is, how do I do that bit?
