tbh alot of computer retailers don't touch laptop upgrades with a barge pole because they are very easily broken and very expensive to repair.Scottish proverb - "Never drink whisky with water and never drink water without whisky"0

It may need a BIOS update to handle that much memory or the new memory module is sh@gged.The Toshiba Equium A60 Series has a maximum capacity of 1280 or 1536MB.
Could any of the expansion memory module contacts have been bent/misaligned?

the system has 1280MB of RAM because of the integrated 256MB and the added 1024MB of RAM.
256
+ 1024
______
1280
Just had a quick look on the Toshiba forums and it basically say for others in the same situation that Toshiba laptops need compatible memory and chances are that the type of memory you have installed isn't compatible and it may have damaged the RAM you insert into the laptop and the RAM slot on your laptops motherboard.
Best thing do is going to be phoning toshiba up to get it fixed by them.Scottish proverb - "Never drink whisky with water and never drink water without whisky"0 -

Have to say that this sounds the most likely scenario. I'm still concerned that you cannot get drives to operate , but this may be due to the fact that the RAM dying means there is no buffer when reading.
It may be time to bite the bullet and contact Toshiba as theCapt says.
Got contents insurance with accidental damage cover?
edit: If you rang Toshiba, do you know what date and time? Who you were speaking to? If you can prove to them that you checked this with their 'experts', you may be in a position to get this done under warranty.0
