Bless you taxi, like everyone else you didn't cheat, of course you didn't. You've paid out month upon month on critical illness cover and what a relief that you did. Basically you bought some insurance and you had to use it.
I don't know if you remember but someone very close to me had breast cancer too back in 2008. Unfortunately she didn't have critical illness cover as her idiot husband (and he is, a complete idiot, so much so that they are now separated thank God) convinced her they didn't need it. Duh. I can't tell you how depressing it is when it comes to her finances now. Anyway she is going back in for reconstruction surgery this year!
I know what a hard slog it is going through the treatment and have a good understanding of the emotional side of it too now. That money is rightfully yours and yep completely understand you would rather not have had cancer but dealing with the hard facts, I am sure you are grateful you were sensible and took out the policy which if nothing else, can hopefully help to make the future somewhat easier now.
OK I'll get off my soapbox now shall I?

Taxi, i rarely actually post but have to say YOU DID NOT CHEAT to get to your DFD!
Hebden bridge is lovely, it's donkey's years since i've been there but i'd love to go again.
Well done on getting your 2 stone loss, that's amazing.0 -
Completely agree with all the others - Taxi you invested in yourselves and were able to use this insurance when you needed it. Exactly what it was there for - not cheating but an important way of protecting you and your family in difficult times!!!! It has also meant that you and your lovely family can move forward from a very difficult time. Please don't think you took an easy way out.
