It's funny how most of you are viewing it as some kind of impressive skill that you've never eaten in a supermarket.

I have the ability as a grown adult to both eat a sandwich and do my shopping at a same time, all the while laughing at the people sat in the car park eating food, but most of all laughing at the scores of people who are deeply offended by such behavior.

    I win.

its about self control, ive been hungry before but have resisted the urge not to eat until i get home, even working in supermarkets amongst food and drink i had self control as i knew it wasnt my food and it would be irresponsible for me to eat whilst working on the shop floor
  • You know, you asked for logical coherent reasons for the stance that myself and many others have here and I've given you some of mine.

You want to disagree? That's totally fine. But insisting on reasonable debate from others (and that _was_ a fair point, sure) then resorting to straw man arguments in reply? You know what, I'm done with wasting my time on you.

For some reason people feel that we need to protect against each and every risk. It just ends up with society being overly constrained and causes more problems than it is worth.

It's not straw man - you said "Do you understand that I feel that the fact that a risk might be small isn't a reason to add to it?"

The risk in my example is small. Should we protect against it?

How many people have been injured from food dropped by people eating in supermarkets? Without some hard numbers, it would hard to say if stopping people eating would prevent accidents.

Isn't that a staff rule though? Most large chains don't let staff eat outside of breaks because whilst they are eating, they aren't working.

So what if I went into the supermarket picked up a sandwich, took it over to the self scan and paid for it then ate it whilst doing the rest of my shopping?

Went shopping to Morrisons last night ( with my £5 Sun newspaper coupon - very MSE :D ).

Was astounded to see a grown man select a packet of biscuits off the shelf, opened them eat several then put them in his trolley!!

Is the need for food this great? :rotfl:

can understand more if it was a young child who was shopping near dinner time but sorry don't get why adults need to do this .......!

    Rant over:eek:

And why do you care what other people do? How is this affecting your life?

I don't do it personally as I would feel uncomfortable but I can't say I have a problem with anyone that does.

I am sincerely enjoying this thread, haven't !!!!ed myself laughing like that for a while. Without meaning to be rude or anything but I really can't imagine being morally outraged by someone eating an apple around a supermarket and that it is somehow indicative of "declining standards in society". I really just can't summon the energy to give a tiny rats !!! over another shopper eating a bag of crisps when shopping and think to myself "I am so angry that pond life over there is enjoying that bag of Doritos in the home baking isle, who do they think they are? God this is symptomatic of everything that is wrong with the world!" To be fair i'm probably more worried about my own life/moral values/shopping tbh than to worry what everyone else is doing. Does that make me an example of declining standards? ;)

I am largely oblivious as to what people are doing/aren't doing when shopping but the other forum users appear to watch other shoppers like a hawk by all accounts. Will now be extremely paranoid on my next trip to Tescos lest I inadvertently offend someone with my gum chewing or mobile phone usage. :)
