School Uniform questions

Isn't this ridiculous, the whole point of school uniforms was to prevent children being made fun of and segregated because they weren't wearing the 'right' clothes or designer labels. So what do they do, make class distinction between kids based on where you buy your clothes and having certain enbroidered detailing and again having labels-even if it is trutex.
I get angry every year when I have to go to a specialist shop to purchase the navy blazer with embroidered pocket, school with tiny embroidered logo and sports top with embroidery at increased prices.
Why can't these schools just sell badges cheap that we can sew on the clothes.
Grrrr....rant over..Thanks to MSE and all the moneysaving tips I can now work PT (instead of FT) to pay the bills and still have fun!!:beer:0 -

Exactly, I had to buy the blazer from school just because of the badge, if they'd have sold just the badge then I could've saved loads by buying the blazer from asda and sewing the badge on! The school wouldn't have made any money then though would they?!
At least now I can take the badge off his blazer when he's outgrown it and sew it onto an asda blazer!
I just need to learn how to sew now!!:rotfl:

looby75 wrote:They are never happy, towards the end of last year I got a letter home about the fact the top button on her blouse kept popping open (again because of the design of the shirt not being compatible with having boobs!) and it was unsuitable for the school environment. What do they want me to do, make her have a breast reduction!
I hope you mention this letter when you contact the school. In my view they've admitted their blouses are not suitable and you have found a suitable alternative
If it were me I'd be 'very surprised' that they have a problem with the blouse your daughter is wearing as they suggested their blouse wasn't suitable0 -
I'm in the same position. We can only get DD's uniform from 1 shop only in the entire UK:eek:   Shirts are £14 a pop and her uniform was in the region of £500.
Do they have a 2nd hand shop, as Im hoping to get a couple more shirts from there next month and they are only £1 each. DD only has 2 shirts ATM and we wash and iron them every day so she has one clean for her..pain in the !!!!!!, but can not afford the £14 ATM.
Truly is a rip off, but she does look so good in her uniform:D

Good idea...but my kids school got around that one by embroidering it on the pocket-(no badge) so i would have to take the whole pockett off and sew on asda blazer...:mad:Thanks to MSE and all the moneysaving tips I can now work PT (instead of FT) to pay the bills and still have fun!!:beer:0 -
Some good ideas here
The other stupid thing is that the very same blouses that trutex embroidered the tiny logo on are available unembroidered on the website for 2 for £8 (so they are charging £9 for 2 small letters to be sewn on each shirt ) so if it had just been a money savings issue I could have bought the plain blouses from the site, got them embroidered at a cost of £2 each and still saved money. It wouldn't have changed the situation about the sizes/fit though.
bumpybecky, Oh I'll definitely be mentioning the letter when I do speak to them. The reason why it will probably have been "over looked" is because she has just moved from the lower site to the uper site, so it's different teachers over there. I don't know if I kept the letter, when I'm feeling up to it I'll have a hunt.
I'm tucked up in bed with my dd's laptop trying to stop shivering at the moment. Ah well being p'ed off at the school is taking my mind off my throat I suppose LOL0 -
!!!!!! thats ridiculous
i like school uniform and can underand why its worn etc but at that price ?!!!
i think they are being hugely unreasonable
i only hope they put as much time and effort into teaching and all the other important stuff as they seem to put into making sure every child has the correct shirt on !0 -
DD has just started school and I'm glad there's a uniform - much less hassle in the mornings - but they don't seem terribly strict about it. Choice of white, blue or yellow polo shirt (with school badge, but there's loads of places in town to get them - I think I paid about £7 for DD's), also a blue sweatshirt for winter (with badge) and there's also a fleece jacket you can buy with the badge on.
I've bought some plain cheapy polo shirts to go under the sweatshirt when the time comes to keep the more expensive badged ones in slightly better condition seeing as you don't see the badge when its under the sweatshirt anyway.
The tops are then supposed to be teamed with black skirt or trousers but I've seen kids there wearing grey, and also girls wearing grey pinafore dresses.
Also, as the weather's been nice since she started she's been wearing her blue gingham dress. The school don't sell any of this so it's easy to get it fairly cheaply if you want. When the kids are older and they start doing competitions etc.. then the school like them to be in a white shirt with school tie, but not for every day wear so that's fair enough I think.
Anyway, I think your school are being totally unreasonable and I'm dreading if DD every encounters such an attitude from her school as I'm on edge talking to the teachers, etc, as it is, given my own experience at school.
Good luck and don't let them walk all over you!!!!
JxxxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -
The weather has been quite warm the last few days and DS has been complaining that he is too hot in school trousers and his eczema has flared up. However I can't seem to get any school shorts (the ones that look like normal smart school trousers but are shorts). I know i am looking at the wrong time of year but can anyone suggest where i might get some please?
I have tried Asda, Tesco, Matalan, Woolies already.0 -
I've seen them in M&S and Adams.
